Hair styling was very important in the 40s with long glamorous hair often set with rollers and parted to one side. These styles were made popular buy some of the most beautiful actresses in Hollywood such as Rita Hayworth, Lauren Bacall, Judy Garland, Ava Gardner and Ingrid Bergman.

Ava Gardner had a coltish, unsophisticated manner which was totally made over by the studio into a conventionally glamorous image. She was also provided with a voice coach, as her Carolina drawl was nearly incomprehensible. She became one of hundreds of well-groomed young starlets on MGM's books and in her first few years in Hollywood, Ava posed for many pin-up photographs which concentrated on her body and legs, but virtually ignored her most striking and unusually beautiful feature - her face.

The creation of Linda Christian's wedding dress, from the skilled hands of the Sorelle Fontana, in 1949, for the celebration of her marriage with Tyrone Power in the church of Santa Francesca Romana in Rome, marks the beginning of Made in Italy. Three young refined artisans from Traversetolo in the province of Parma: Zoe, Giovanna and Micol Fontana, with their roman atelier in via di San Sabastianello, soon became the international point of reference for High Fashion.

Amongst the selection there are several models from the 50's notably tied to the history of cinema: the well known "cassock" dress created for Ava Gardner and then worn by Anita Ekberg in Federico Fellini's "La dolce vita", the gowns created for Michelangelo Antonioni's "Le Amiche", and Ava Gardner in "The barefoot contessa" by Mankievwicz.

Opera Gloves

Ava Gardner, in her time, was reputed to be Hollywood's most beautiful woman. Ava starred in numerous movies, was Frank Sinatra's wife for eight years, and made herself even more elegant, if that is possible, by wearing opera gloves that showed off her long, toned arms that Ava was very proud of and showed off to great effect by wearing low cut evening gowns.
