I have this book on Ava Gardner, I havn't read it yet though, there's some pictures in it that havn't been posted I don't think, so I'll scan them, and post them either tomorrow or Monday.

Fashion authority Valerie Steele, author of the new book, "The Black Dress," discussed what arguably could be the most important item in any woman's wardrobe.

Anonymous: Assuming that the dress from GILDA, with Rita Hayworth inside it, is the most famous black dress of all time, what are your other all-time favorite black dresses in film?

Valerie Steele: My book also includes Audrey Hepburn's LBD, of course, and Ava Gardner in a GREAT black dress from "The Killers." Wearing that slinky, long black dress, Ava set the screen on fire. They just don't make dresses like that anymore!

Nipped-in waists and breasts thrust skywards might make a woman’s figure look good but what, asks Lara Macmillan, is fashion doing to their health?

The modern desire for an hourglass figure really began in the 1940s and 50s when curves were manipulated with whalebone corsets and conical bras.

This was the time when the curvaceous icons competed to out-glam each other - Sophia Loren and Gina Lollobrigida, Marilyn Monroe and Ava Gardner all took high-impact dressing to new extremes. Ava of course stood alone in that she had a naturally waspish 20 inch waist

Pencil skirts

Pencil skirts have been drifting in and out of fashion for a couple of years now and it’s really no wonder we can’t bring ourselves to let them go. For decades they have been turning heads and making women feel like, well just that really, like women! Pencil skirts really hit their stride in the 50s when Ava Gardner and Gina Lollibridgida took them to new heights of glamour. Not only does a well fitted pencil skirt hug your curves, define your waist, and give nearly everybody the appearance of having perfect pins, it’s also going to be a perfect match for your little swing coat. Team one up with a smart blouse or cardigan, slip into some pumps and with minimal effort you’ve created a classic, glamorous outfit.

Inspiration: Marilyn Monroe, Dita von Teese, Ava Gardner
Hint: If you feel that you’re waist isn’t quite what it could be why not do as the 1950’s glamour queens like say Ava Gardner, did and slip on a satin waist cincher, they can be surprisingly snug and comfortable. In the end it’s about accentuating the good and disguising the less desirable.

There can be no other firm on Savile Row that has changed its character so completely than Maurice Sedwell. Trinidad-born Andrew Ramroop arrived at Huntsman as a teenager having served his apprenticeship in Trinidad from the tender age of thirteen. Here he shares his thoughts:

JS: Are we allowed to talk about Ava Gardner?

AR: Ava Gardner was never a client. But the actor Charles Grey was and he lived at Ennismore Gardens in London and I recall telling him that when I was a kid every boy in Trinidad was in love with Ava Gardner. Well, he invited me over to his apartment and there was Ava Gardner. I was trembling and way, way out of my depth but she was sensational.

Thanks to celebrity trendsetters like burlesque queen Dita Von Teese, there's a revival of the pin-up style of '40s and '50s screen sirens like Rita Hayworth and Ava Gardner. So get ready to cast off your shapeless shifts and bring sexy ¨C but classy ¨C back.

According to Frey, other ways to playfully incorporate the trend include carrying a small frame handbag, cinching your waist with a wide or skinny belt, and lingerie-inspired touches such as bows and lace details, rouching and gathers, and subtle hair ornaments with feathers, sequins, and beads. Into the fall, opera length gloves will be all the rage. Frey says to think Ava if all else fails. "You never saw Ava Gardner looking less than 100% marvelous."
