Women usually carried their handbags. American movie stars such as Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly and Ava Gardner also influenced women’s fashion. Parisian fashions such as Christian Dior’s “New Look” which featured pinched in waist and full skirts were eagerly sought out and copied by Australian women. Ava's visit to Australia during the filming of "On the Beach" gave Aussie women a real taste of Hollywood glamour.

Ava Garder Suite
Once upon a time she was thought to be the most beautiful woman in the world. Ava Gardner led an exciting life on and off screen and gained immense popularity as an enchanting actress.

Ava Gardner was in Singapore for the Asian premiere of her film, `The Barefoot Contessa', when she stayed at Raffles Hotel in the mid-1950s.

The suite is furnished with an old-fashioned brass bed with lace curtains and a photograph of the very glamourous Miss Gardner arriving at the Hotel. Books written on her life and movie ‘The Barefoot Contessa' are available for residents to get a glimpse of her life and journey to fame.

Stretching along the whole top floor this suite offers the largest terrace available in the Hotel with an incomparable view of the harbour, promontory and Brown Castle, fully visible from the bed and the sitting room.

The 56 square metre (603 square feet) terrace is adorned by a huge potted lemon tree and hanging flowering Mediterranean plants of all kind. The bedroom is large and incredibly well lit from two windows which highlight the soft pastel tones of the walls, fabrics and furniture.

A large door connects to the sitting room, sober and very solar, thanks to an almost wall-to-wall glass window which, when open, gives the sitting room and terrace a feeling of just one large space, half indoor and half outdoor.

City high-flyer Helen Barklam has given up her career in London to fulfil what must be every girl’s dream… designing and selling handbags. Her new handbag company - launched last weekend - carries classic leather handbags and vintage designs inspired by mid-20th Century glamour and beautiful women like Ava Gardner and Grace Kelly.

Appropriately the business – which is online and via mail order - is called ava and grace.

Budding entrepreneur Helen has taken her inspiration from one of our most glamorous eras and designed a classic and stylish handbag collection for decadent 21st century women.

Helen says: “I couldn’t find a simple, gorgeous, classic bag on the high street – so I decided to do something about it! All women want a little style and glamour in their lives and who better to be inspired by than style icons like Ava Gardner, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe?

“ava and grace bags are simply designed to be classic and stylish. But, that can be hard to find these days. On behalf of all handbag-loving women out there, I wanted to take us back to a good old fashioned and understated look – classic, elegant and stylish.”

Modern-day hepcats can gaze out at Times Square, Columbus Circle, and the Hudson River from their lofty perch atop the Dream Hotel, where AVA Lounge takes up the penthouse floor. Named for Ava Gardner, the lounge’s colour palette of white and cool soft blues and greens, mod furnishings, and panoramic views of the city fittingly capture a Rat Pack ambience. In the summer, the outdoor space transforms into a lush English-garden-inspired wonderland where Manhattan’s movers and shakers sip martinis as they take in the stunning view. AVA is an appropriately stylish apex for this dazzling hotel, where exotic statues fill the lobby and the downstairs DREAM Lounge - which shares owners with AVA – presents a vivid pinstriped cocktail playground.

Those pics you posted script are 100% amazing! Sometimes I have to shake my head because Ava's beauty was impressive. Just look at her side profile with her hair down (post 3141). How much more hot can you get?
