"It's Parisian," said Nicolas Ghesquière of the assured melding of drape, print, and tailoring he sent out in the sparkling daylight streaming into the Hôtel de Crillon. The designer had mined the Balenciaga archive, examined the structure of a drape-waisted forties redingote, thought over a later sari-inspired collection, and pulled up three late-sixties scarf prints. He took it from there to design a modern translation in satin, printed silk, and fragile dévoré velvet.

It made for a sumptuous collection that played down his sci-fi tendencies in favor of a softer femininity. The Ghesquière codes were in play, too, of course. The draping (which he's explored before) emerged first in swagged charmeuse skirts, suspended from a hip-hugging yoke, and then in a fluid, wrapped relation of the jodhpur shape he brought into fashion two years ago. The shoes could only have come from him: patchworked distillations of everything that was going on in the collection, with jersey print, mesh, suede, scarf ties, and a heavy walking-boot tread on the sole.

There was a sense that Ghesquière was walking a fine line between embracing pragmatism and pushing luxurious experimentation. He showed a creamy beige coat and an impeccable black tuxedo jacket with striped menswear pants. There was also a little black dress, along with shaved mink silhouettes appliquéd onto a knit base to wrap smoothly around the body as coat-dresses, all relatively plain. Mostly, though, it's the way Ghesquière worked print that will be pored over by fashion diagnosticians. Anyone on the lookout for eighties influences might see something Dynasty (though there was nothing ostentatious or literal about it) in the puffed shoulders of the spotted and streaked prints that were wrapped into dresses and fragile blouses. The word, in the end, was sophistication: Ghesquière didn't pull back on the Balenciaga insistence on developing couture-level handwork, but there was also a sense of reality that sent cohorts of pressured buyers out onto the Place de la Concorde with relieved smiles on their faces. "Wearable" and "money in the bank," they were calling it. Not compliments they're throwing around easily in these strained times.

he didn't dissapionted me at all!!
I want someting new This time is the time of creativity I don't like designner who look back and stick wiht the archive someting that they used to done!!

Thanks balenciaga and I know The stuff in the shop would never be like this so I enjoy to watching this show

It's like my motto thit I like "It's nice to see but hard to wear "
So why not !! It is fashion
now we should do "Fashion is Fashion" back agian!!

not that bad..at least, this is Roitfeld's favourites..she's gonna wear it out

It's so odd with a talent like his, how he could have completely MISSED with this collection. Trying out the 80s YSL Ungaro eBay look? Fine. But at least get the proportions, the drape, the textures, the accessories RIGHT. It's all so wrong here, one of the most hideous parade of clothes. To me, this season's Balenciaga has already shown...at Jil Sander!

I'm also extremely disappointed with the venue. The previous location was perfect...it became a Balenciaga signature.

That´s exactly what I´ve been thinking!

Honestly, I´m disappointed as well. I like some pieces, but the whole thing is not what I would expect from Nicolas.

The pre-fall collection actually had me pretty excited. This is such a dissapointment :-/

Lanvin and McQueen...please don't let me down!

as a whole, i love this collection. i think nicholas could do without the hard-edge for a while. though most of these outfits were draped, but i still see edge in it, not hard edge, but definitely shaped, like those satin draped skirts in the begining.
even the heavily printed outfits was quite nice, strangely because im usually repulsed by too much print. though there are some outfits that could do without

many of the textiles look like vomit and the draping looks overworked.

I liked the first bit of the collection, but i was surprised that this was balenciaga, i had to look very closely to see the structures in the clothes.. weird. not satisfied..

i'm really really disappointed...........we're so so far from the "futiristic" spirit of balenciaga, especially compared to the SS 07 collection !!! THAT was wonderful !!! but now, we're closer from a grandma' style....

...its a collection of printed silk wrap dresses? come on NG you can do better than that. though i do love your shoulders

it was good collection. but it didnt click balenciaga exception of few starting pieces
