Balenciaga Haute Couture F/W 2023.24 Paris

I don't hate this, I have not been following fashion for a while, but I like what I see, I don't care about prices, couture has nothing to do with that, couture is about technique, details, aesthetics...

I have been having the feeling that fashion has become boring for many years already, soul-less and Demna's work is still 'interpelling' me, something that seduces, hooks, lures... within its ugliness, I feel quite captivated by it, and that make me enjoy it.

The music was tiring though.

I'm sorry guys this was Amazing , so much workmanship, love the colors, shapes and handwork. The best part is the return to a kind of grand couture but in contemporary way.

At the same time, Demna is sooo engaged in the couture venture that it's Peter Copping who describes the process behind particular pieces in the social media content.

Maybe I'm spoiled by documentaries made about Chanel and Dior but the BTS images I've seen on instagram leave something to be desired.

Just throwing this out there: the senior designer for couture was hired from Alexander Wang and that's kinda what the clothes look like it.

It’s really endearing how makeshift, unpretentious, and non-fussy, straightforward the environment and workers are. (...Of course, it could very well be just a calculated strategy to enforce this auteur-sensibility and air since Demna has such a flair for role-playing…) Reminds me of the young designers I worked with: Working from a spare room, basement, living room of their apartment. But the completed offerings were really all kinds of wonderful. Who cares about the formality of dress-coded seamstresses and tailors in a spacious lab… Still LMAO at the pomp and pageantry of Dior and I, with Raf rambling on and on about Gerhard Richter as inspiration and how precise the space-age material had to be blah blah blah. And the result was something that resembled a hippie student's failed attempt at tie-dye slop. Formality means little (nothing) when the results are the Emperor’s New Clothes. Not everything works and there are absolutely whiffs of The Emperor’s New Clothes with Demna’s couture-- as with everything he touches. However, many of the offerings are fresh revision/reimagining/revamping of a fabled tradition that actually moves the process of couture along a sleek modernity-- with an engineering degree and all.

Some of the collection does reflect Cristobal esque pattern making. Thats about 15% of the collection though. Hardly enough to make a dent. The main look drivers are that Salvation Army in Moldova energy Demena loves so much.

What I didn't understand about this collection was the inclusion of armor elements; that's not related to Balenciaga house code to any stretch of my memory or understanding. To promise redirection only to present the same tired looks; it's time for his removal. The storied house of Balenciaga deserves so much more than to have a tarnished lapse of time. Demna's time is up. We need to move on from this. All of us.
