Balenciaga Mens F/W 2015.16 : Sam Smith by Josh Olins

I literally don't get it....why??

He looks very Jude Law-y imo, I like the dark vibe.
A mod should include "mens" to the title cause I was a bit confused at first, like "where are the girls?"

I don't this this has anything to do with his look. There's a greater message that transcends fashion.

Fashion is more homophobic than most people can imagine, especially when it comes to menswear. This campaign if very important.

That's odd, I see this as just another celebrity booking a fashion campaign. Something which feels extremely common this season. I would actually be disgusted if Balenciaga purposely used his sexual orientation to flog trousers and jackets. Sexual orientation has never been a selling point for me to begin with, so perhaps that's why I devalue the 'gay icon' angle (if there was one) and see this clear cut - Sam Smith, the pop star advertising Balenciaga's collection. When you subtract the Armanis and D&Gs of the fashion world, you'll actually find that the industry was and probably will always be, very pro-gay.

That's a good point max. But it's still high fashion where image is everything, and this guy is just not the figurehead I'd like to for the political/social relevance-- nor for high fashion. I guess his dreadful music, and for shallowness's sake, his mug, is simply not what I'd prefer.

Fashion is often very heteronormative--especially when it comes to menswear. But this campaign does nothing to challenge that and it's certainly not "important". It's just another way of drumming up publicity with an overhyped celebrity. Nothing more, nothing less.

I think they could use his sexual orientation as a thing to attract people (do you remember their cast for f/w 15 show which was their (fake) statement about diversity?) but even if they didn't think about that for a second, this whole campaign is a gimmick. Personally I don't have anything against Sam, but come on, it's Balenciaga.

Darling! The USE of sexuality in this ad is unlike the others your comparing it to. Alexander Purposely chose Sam(and his sexual orientation) with a political agenda in mind. He has an enormous platform at Balenciaga why shouldn't he use it to gain RESPECT for his community.

If there ever was a reason to use a celebrity...........
