Quite a few of them on the catwalks already, some covered by sheer panels...

Oh no ,I hope this won't catch on. I hate seeing pierced bellybuttons xD

This trend doesn't work in the real world! Only a very tiny number of people can pull this type of look off without looking sloppy.

Oh, no this trend looks dreadfull poorly executed. it rarely looks good, I know people want this to look edgy but to me it looks rather unfinished.

I've always liked bare midriffs but this "trend" was already noticeable in last year's Spring collection and I didn't see it catch on in real life. I loved the way it was done at Helmut Lang, I'll definitely be getting those bra tops :innocent:

i'm going to go with the flow here and echo that this should NOT be tried off the runway...
it rarely even looks good ON the runway...

please...just say NO!...
:judge:...

Oh God! This is giving me severe 90's flashbacks...I really hope it doesn't have a trickle down effect and result in the return of baby t's - there was a whole decade my long-torsoed self had to go without properly fitting t-shirts!

I'm sick and tired of seeing girls, small and large, walking around with their cropped tops and leggings (or in the best scenario, jeans).

The bare belly trend really shouldn't be continued, it looks silly. Show off your belly piercings at the beach, please!

I beg to differ. I think if done tastefully, bare midriffs can work very well off the runway. Personally my rule of thumb is that the belly-button mustn't be showing, so whatever skirt or high-waisted trousers are paired with the cropped top have to cover the belly button. I think this removes the tartiness and sloppiness and reduces the chance of having unsightly muffin top if the bottoms sit at the true waist.

I'll definitely be rocking this look this upcoming summer and have a couple of cropped tops from past season Dolce and Gabbana, and Sass and Bide that I'll be pairing with high waisted skirts, pants and some scalloped shorts I have, along with plain black flats or some muted tan loafer heels. Can't wait!

I like crop tops with high waisted bottoms, I've seen some girl who've worn this look and they look great! You have to have a banging bod though. One of my friends, while she is skinny, has been wearing cropped tops a lot recently and they just don't look good on her. So yeah, banging bod necessary! haha.

No, no, no, this is just so wrong in almost any case. While it may look decent on the runway in a more covering version like at Alexander Wang, this is the place is should stay. I generally hate it in real life.

I think when done right -- meaning tailored pieces on top and bottom, and the bottom covering the bellybutton as others have said -- can look really chic. I also am among fans of Gwyneth's Globes dress. A flash of rib cage is fresh and feminine to me.

Oscarprgirl does the look well imo, I've saved a few of her shots. Photo credit: oscarprgirl.tumblr.com

Completely agree.

The most tasteful example of this in my opinion was MaxMara Spring 2006:
