btw, those Junya trench coats and jackets are amazing. The TAO trench coat also looked 1,000 times better than pictures. Now I am just praying that Bostonians are not into those designers and I can get them at sale

I totally love the ann dem jacket. but $1,200 seems high for it. I was torn putting that Lanvin jacket back to rack...

The good stuff sticks around until sale time even in Los Angeles. Your chances are probably pretty good in boring Boston (I'm refering to the masses, not you of course Caffeine). As far as I can tell only New York in the U.S.A. has enough people who like and are willing to pay for the good stuff such that you have to worry about someone snagging it from you at full price.

the women's selection is great, as for the men's, the jury is still out for me. they have demeulemeester, dior homme, cloak, branquinho, margiela, balenciaga... no carpe, raf, rick owens, yohji, junya (at least, i didn't see junya). no dries due to his prior agreement with louis boston. shoe selection is poor. a lot of prada, marc jacobs, trovata/co-op type stuff. very large suit selection. they mentioned they are already thinking about trying out raf and rick owens in the fall, but i'll wait and see. i did buy something from demeulemeester... not the piece from her i originally wanted, but a really nice one.

Thanks Haruki since I visited Alan Bilzerian last year, I realized that there was a solid group of people who have the money and the taste to buy those not-so-boring clothes in Boston. as of my lunch time trip yesterday, I saw one women buying some TAO pieces off the rack and another women purchasing a CDG jacket (yeah the beautiful one). Some women bought a couple of Rick Owens sweaters......they are those 40-50 yrs old women living in Brookline, Newton, Beacon Hill area full of cash in hand.

I guess that is why Barneys opened a big store in Boston because they just got too many requests from Boston to ship pieces from the New York store. I admit that I am quite nervous now btw, there is also a solid Japanese student group who buy CDG and Junya pieces in Boston.

The only thing I do not like is that the people working in downtown are quite boring......I guess all the adventurous women don't have to work, or don't have to work in offices. the demographic is quite interesting here.

the shoes are good there. it's time to get spring collections so I am sure we'll see new things every time we go. i'm itchy on a Junya sweater there

this doesn't sound bad. dries is definitely a big hole. as far as cdiem, owens, and the footwear - the situation at the new york store is not much better. there is now only two pairs of boots left of the cdiem collection - no more clothes. 80% of owens stock is the dark shadow crap, and the footwear section is nothing to write home about (besides the aforementioned cdiem boots - the ugliest of the styles they make, and some collection privee - there is nothing there). what did you buy from Ann?

I would never shop at a Barneys for the fact that I never feel like im getting something special. Clothing at those prices should be treated with a bit more attention to detail and merchandising. I once witnessed a 5,000 Yohji dress hung inside out and up side down in the barneys NYC. I was appauled. Its too large of a department store for me. the clothing of these "edgy designers" that they try to carry always feel commercialized in such a large atmosphere. Go to bilzerian and Riccardi to get an individual and more intimate connection to the collections!

i like the fact that they have the designers name painted on the wall above the rack...makes everything easy to find.

did not see any thomas wylde.

That's funny - I found Riccardi completely unappealing and cramped... and that's just the store I'm talking about. Barneys stuff a very different lineup, no?

I also went the first day they were open to the general public. I was surprised to see Dior Homme and Demeulemeester there for mens. You can tell that the buyer for mens held back from buying the more adventurous pieces that buyers in NYC wouldn't have had a problem picking up. The Ann stuff is mostly very plain. None of her really interesting pieces aside from a really sweet striped sweater (toooo expensive though). The DH stuff is mostly dress shirts and the like. Like others have said already, the footwear just plain sucks.

I'll have to check out the Cloak rack. I didn't notice it when I blew through there.

The buyer for womens should get a pat on the back. Rochas, Lanvin, Ann D., Rick Owens?! Solid. The Ann pieces were beautiful and there was this cropped and fitted jacket that was just stunningly sexy.

Overall, not bad... but I won't be buying anything before the sales time. Whereas Bilzerian carries more interesting items from the same designers as well as Carpe and McQueen etc. I'll still go to NYC for Atelier, IF, and others but Barneys is a nice addition to the Boston shopping scene for sure!

Bilzerian carries nice stuff, but their approach is weird. They remove all original hangtags and put their own on with their own sizing system. Things aren't organized by brand that distinctly either. Obnoxious... sales are good when they're going on, but stuff that doesn't sell during sale get put back up to full price. There is a McQueen sweater with the suede "holster" that has been there for 2+ seasons now and it goes on sale, goes back up to full price, goes on sale, goes back up to full price.

The SA Mook called me this past weekend to say that they got in some more Ann so I may stop in this weekend to check it out... but likely not buy. Spent too much as it is!

thats very annoying that allan b takes off the original hang tags. how are people supposed to know what the retail price is rather than what allan b wants to charge for them?

filenes basement pulls the same shenanigans when it comes to fancy designer sale stuff. their stuff that doesn't sell during sale get put back up to full price or they switch the dates. its really obvious. theres stuff thats been in there for YEARS.
