I am just gobsmacked by everything on this album, it's amazing. And I have to hand it to Beyonce, that she was able to be so in-control of the videos, the songs, and even the release date. She has a great team around her and the whole album is a total tour de force, I can't stop listening to the songs and watching the videos. From my initial listenings it feels more intimate and also socially aware then some of Beyonce's other songs and albums (which while I totally love them I really admire her for these new raw songs). And the music videos themselves, WOW, they are total works of art.
Right now I'm really loving her song
Flawless, especially because she samples one of the great writers of our time, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's, TED talk on feminism. It is these words that give the song more depth and makes it a powerful track. Also, the fact that Beyonce clearly mentions feminism on her record is amazing, I love the fact that people around the world (especially young women) will be listening to this record and specifically to this song and hear that it's okay to be a feminist.
I also really love the music video for
Mine, it's just beautiful to watch and the dancing and vibe of the video is spot on. Another song on the album that I find to be incredibly powerful is
Pretty Hurt, the music video and the lyrics combined speak volumes about the pressures that women feel to be gorgeous. It's a really well done video, although it could be considered triggering for some people who have issues with self harm and whatnot. Oh, and I really liked the video that accompanies the song
Superpower, the message it sends is quite powerful. And I like that Beyonce is tackling different issues in her songs and videos it's neat to see. Overall, I'm just really in love with this whole record and it's going to be played a lot in my household over the next few days/weeks/months.
