i'm not really surprised that Preserve wasn't profitable but i am surprised that she isn't keeping the site open just to focus on promotion of her own work - that would save face.

anyone else surprised?

I'm more surprised that she admitted that Preserve hadn't lived up to expectations. A lot of celebrities refuse to admit that their personal endeavours failed, and while it's not a positive note for Blake I really admire her for being honest, not making excuses and trying to stay positive.

Didn't she basically rush its reveal so that it would be ready by the time her Vogue cover was shot?

She may even have lost a lot of money on launching the site. She would have kept it open if it were profitable (Gwyneth Paltrow's goop is not yet profitable and is over a million dollars in the red)

here is an interesting perspective on the closure.

Lucy, thanks ever so much for directing us to that article. It's an exceptionally well-written take which perfectly echoes my sentiments about the Preserve, indeed, celebrity lifestyle commerce debacle. The way I see it the whole concept of the site was too vacuous. Add to that all the bad online press she got before launching, so she essentially had her demographic seeing right through the facade even before selling an artisan spoon. You just watch, Goop will be next. I'm not sure what Jessica Simpsons winning recipe is. Apparently her venture is sitting pretty in a plush position on the NY Stock Exchange. When it comes to fashion, I see she's back with Kors. Anna originally paired her with Kors, and I think they work well together.

Blake was just on a hollywood reporter cover with Kors. i don't see kors selecting her to be in seasonal ads though. just to wear his items for industry events.

reese witherspoon just raised 10 million dollars (for a total of 17 million) from outside investors for her "southern" company draper james. however reese has more critical acclaim and appeal than blake though. not to mention that reese's items cost less than a lot of the wares on blake's site.

i wouldnt discount gwyneth's goop yet - especially if skincare/makeup is going to be launched in 2016...

i don't think blake had outside investors, did she?

do you think blake was over estimating her appeal when she launched Preserve? or do you think her fans just don't want to purchase those particular items that she was selling?

Blake catered to the wrong group of people. Young women are her fans who cannot afford a four hundred dollar poncho and don't want some engraved artisan spoons. Her website was all over the place and had no clear direction. Her business team needed to understand who actual follows Blake because it's not people who want fancy ketchup and old spoons.

I do think she was overestimating her appeal a bit. I like her just fine, but Gossip Girl was much more hype than actual ratings, and I would argue that she wasn't even the breakout star. She's more known for her marriage, attending events, and style, but I don't think she has as many fans who would buy her stuff as she does admirers in the press.

Totally agree! :flower:

That is such a good article. Really sound business advice in general.

I think Michael Kors is the perfect brand for her but it couldn't be a celebrity endorsement anyway.

I don't think her appeal is overestimates, I do think she overestimated the appeal of another celebrity lifestyle brand, specially one that was so poorly executed as "Preserve."
