Brookline is where I'll be living as well.

I just cant be too close to that Party Favor store, the have the best cupcakes EVER.

Even better than Magnolia Bakery in NYC!!
yeah? are you going to college around there?

>.> where's the party favor store...I will want cupcakes.

^Also the Brookline Booksmith is great, and I've been wanting to go to the Coolidge Corner theater for a while now.

I lived in Brookline last semester, and now I kinda miss it.

what do you guys think of stel's?. i've never been before, but they have a.p.c so i want to go

stels is having a "warehouse sale" at the end of april. stuff will be 75% off icluding APC. you can read about it in the april copy of lucky magazine on the boston shopping page.

i have never purchased anything there but i plan to check out the sale.

i went to filenes basement last night and they had a lot of items from barneys. i picked up some imitation of christ jeans for 22.50. they had acne jeans for 50$ and superfine jeans for 70. they had some azzedine alaia for seven jeans that were 25$ but they were missing the laces....drat.

i think with these lesser known labels the basement just randomly picks a price...

the jasmine sola warehouse on commonwealth avenue is a good place to check for upper end jeans (seven for all mankind etc) for 50% or more...

Im going to be in the Boston area (getting my apartment) the weekend of April 20th. Any good sales for then? For men?

It's also the weekend before my Bday, so I have been given a shopping trip as a Bday present. I think I most defintely want to hit Filenes. Which one is the best?

God I wish the filenes basement in braintree had good stuff :( there's never ANYTHING there, the only things that I find are rude people who shove you around to get their oh so speshal Roca wear.

I'm gonna have to go to that bakery and the bookstore too :)

What's stels and a.p.c. (supernoob)

p.s. congrats on the new apt. and happy birthday

stel's is a store that's kind of hidden on newbury it's on the bottom next to condomworld haha. and a.p.c. is a clothing brand that also makes candles which i found to be surprising.

I subscribe to DailyCandy for Boston that often lists some great shops, sales, events etc for Boston.

Im getting geared up to be "in the know" by the time I move.

hahahah I subscribe to daily candy but I never find the time to go to any of the fashion events in boston. by the time I consider them I'm like, "oh...that was today"

Ianastar, thanks for tipping me off to the cupcakes at Party Favors! I will definitely have to hit them up very soon....somtimes a good cupcake can be hard to find and I've had a cupcake craving for months now. :p

Congrats on your Filene's finds, lucy. Which location was that?

seeing as I can't get my hands on lucky magazine, do you know when this sale would be, exactly? thanks so much!

What happened to Urban Outfitters? LOL, I used to be able to find such cool things there on sale for very cheap, but nowdays everytime I go there (granted, not very often), only crap's on sale and anything half decent is priced like crazy (for me anyway).

urban is a lost cause for me most of the time. i'm not into graphic tees as much as i was in high school and the jeans there fit me awkwardly so i don't go in as often as i used to. and i just went back to the filene's basement in downtown crossing since the renovations... it was interesting. i felt like they gave up on the men's section. it has like nothing now. but i did find a j. lindenberg cardigan which i almost bought online for $145 and got it for $20. it was priced incorrectly which made my day! it was supposed to be $50 which is still great but they let me have it for $20! so that was a great find. i also was happy to see a rack of Zara clothing. however it wasn't anything special but i did snag a shirt that i'll admit i might not ever wear but i liked the idea of me wearing it. maybe to a themed party. yeahhh.

that was my boston shopping adventure. oh that and spending money once again at marc jacobs. what am i to do when i move to cali and the closest one is in la? maybe cry?

oh and stel's warehouse sale april 20-23 or something like that. anyone else excited for 75% off? yeahh me too!

New magazine will be in fashion for city

Chloe Gotsis

A new fashion magazine aimed at tapping into Boston's many label-conscious shoppers will hopefully inspire readers to rediscover a seemingly lost art in the city, experts say -- a move many say has been a long time coming.

The monthly Fashion Boston, owned by the Boston Globe Media company and which will officially launch May 8, will fill a void in a city without a local publication exclusively devoted to clothing, experts say.

"In the past few years, Boston has become more of a 'fashion town' as evidenced by new, luxury stores coming into the market," Boston Globe Managing Director Lucy Barholomay said in an email. "We thought that Boston needed a serious fashion magazine."

The magazine has enlisted as its editor Alexandra Hall, the Boston editor of the nationwide online food and fashion magazine Daily Candy and former lifestyle editor of Boston Magazine.

"Hall knows Boston and loves fashion," Bartholomay said, adding she understands recent dramatic changes in the fasion landscape.

Bartholomay said the magazine will feature full-page photos of designs and accessories while highlighting "what is curious and unique about Boston," featuring local and national designers.

Packaged with the Globe, the magazine will reach more than 100,000 high-income households in the Greater Boston area, according to a March 30 press release from Globe Media, which is owned by The New York Times Company. The decision to launch the monthly magazine is part of Globe Media's new strategy to target specific audiences through different publications to offset declining readership, the press release states.

"With all the big-name fashion brands establishing a presence here, it's obvious that there is a demand," said Boston Fashion Week founder Jay Calderin in an email.

Boston's retail scene, which he described as a "combination of old-world tradition" and international influences -- a reflection of its large college population -- is as competitive as any other major city's, he said.

"[The magazine] should also help to prove that Boston is a fashion-conscious city," he said.

According to Elaine Perlov, a New York fashion designer and owner of the "Immortal Coil" clothing line, which she started in Boston, said the city has a strong presence of luxury designers, including Gucci, Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton.

"The fashion consumer scene is very big in Boston, especially with so many luxury condos there to support it. Boston is a very high-end town."

Perlov said that in addition to the growing population of wealthy consumers, the city's eclectic mix of artists is crucial to supporting the fashion scene.

"On the surface, [the fashion market] is very label-based [and] very label-conscious," she said, "but if you scratch the surface, there are great artist communities that are not known to exist."

Perlov said she expects the fashion magazine will find its niche.

"People are starved for creative things in Boston," she said.

Hall could not be reached for comment.

Oh, a new mag. Cool!!

I never find anything at Urban Outifitters, it all seems to be overpriced crap.

Im not keen on the whole making tshirts to look like vintage ones, and then charging an arm and a leg.

Id rather find a good authentic vintage one on ebay and pay less.

yeah I agree Ianastar, like I have great vintage shirts from when I was little. Old school Nickolodean gak splat shirts. Emo and scene kids at my school would kill for that kinda gear :D

Okay, so let me get this straight.

There is a Filene's and a Filene's Basement right? Which is better for shopping (good deals etc.) The Basement?

And where is it located?? Im trying to plan my trip next week. I know I want to hit H&M and a few shops on Newbury.
