Eh, I did a search and couldn't find a thread on the poor wunderkind. What do you think about him? Love him or hate him? I, personally, am on the fence about the guy. Sometimes I love him and am fascinated by him, ^_^ and there are other times I can't stand him and want to shove a Prozac down his throat!

I've taken the liberty of putting a face to the name:

I love him! His lyrics has so much meaning to them. I know someone who used to date him, and it's been said he is manic depressive :( Poor thing, that could really explain many of his lyrics.

I think hes certainly attractive, but from what I've listened to I don't really like his music.

I think hes a genius, but then again so does he :ninja:

I could care less for the guy, and care lesser for the music.
Whats the hype about singing so off-key?
His lyrics have no "deeper" meaning then any other passionate musician.
They just make less sense, but since we are talking about conor, that must have been so trendy in 1999.

Love him...saw him live at ULU in London.

My main pet peeve with him is his preoccupation with death. It's weird. Especially in the Digital album, which is fitting giving the title of the LP but I just don't undestand why he would want to focus an entire album on such a cliched topic. :ermm: Don't get me wrong, there are some songs on there that are amazing (and don't delve so deep in his 'dark' psyche) such as Take It Easy (Love Nothing) and uhhh....okay well that's my favorite. And yeah, his voice is a bit of an....aquired taste. I think it can be lovely at points, such as in Lua, given the nature of the song, when his voice breaks, it just reinstates how fragile the girl is. But other times it seems forced. I dunno, he's very divisive, no?

complete opposite opinion.
Same here.

So incredibly pretentious and derivative. And his vocal style is so "acted". Fake, fake, fake...in my oh-so-humble opinion.

i've heard only a few songs of his. i would really love to get more of it..my friend loves his music so much. thats sad hes a manic depressive :(

he was severely lacking in sense of humor....

cant sing.

but the lyrics are nice.

I can understand some of the criticism, though it's funny how tunes change once someone becomes popular. :innocent:

I think my favorite song is "Theme from Pinata" - it's just lovely.

I'm a bit more on the fence than this will come off, but i think he's tres gifted. I think he's an incredible, deep lyricist. I think "Lua" is a brilliant representation of substance abuse. It's easy to be abstract and come off as deep, or to make up your own language... but to be truly, eloquently poetic and meaningful is a gift.

His voice is indeed grating... but so can Dylan's be... He does seem to put on an "act"... but so did Dylan... so when people call him the "new Dylan", as much as i think comparisons like that are arbitrary and even stupid, i can shake my head and think "yeah, i can see that."

So when you add all the pluses and minuses together, for me the sum comes out positive.

I like a lot of his music, but my god the guy is such a winer. He can't get over himself for half a second he is so self-involved. I agree that he is a good lyricist and I don't mind that he is off key, but some of his songs are so over the top that they are annoying. And since a big ego is my #1 turnoff I can't say I am a fan.

i love the bright eyes. maybe because i don't care as much about oberst's personality as others do? there are other self-centered sissies in the music business that still make fascinating music.

i think he is a very talented artist, i love the music and the lyrics, he really does create new images, or at least make them appear new to me. what is a very great achievement.

but.. i will stay away from their concerts from now on.

Agree... oh how I agree. ^_^

oh jeez  my boyfriend has gotten mistaken for him on the street before, which we find weird

i saw bright eyes once (i went to see the opening band, arab strap, but stayed around to see what all the fuss was about - i'd never heard bright eyes at that point) and was disgusted not only by the music, but his demeanor - he was inhaling red wine the whole time, got blindingly drunk, and started making fun of and putting down the girls in the audience who obviously loved him. this was years ago, who knows if he's grown up, but i somehow doubt it.

Amazing with his lyrics but if I am in the mood to listen to something familiar I would prefer getting my Elliott Smith cd. But none the less amazing lyrics. I would love to see him live also.

omg , wtf

^ As much as i abhor that kind of behavior and demeanor, Jim Morrison was known to do the same thing - and worse. :ninja:

i think conor oberst is a hit or miss. he does write good lyrics.
