Inventor of Instant Noodles Dies at 96

TOKYO Jan 6, 2007 (AP)— Momofuku Ando, the Japanese inventor of instant noodles a dish that has sustained American college students for decades has died. He was 96.

Nissin Food Products Co., the company Ando founded, said on its Web site that he died Friday after suffering a heart attack.

Born in Taiwan, Ando founded his company in 1948 from a humble family operation. Faced with food shortages in post-World War II Japan, Ando thought a quality, convenient noodle product would help feed the masses.
In 1958, his "Chicken Ramen" the first instant noodle was introduced after many trials. Following its success, the company added other products, such as the "Cup Noodle" in 1971.

"The Momofuku Ando Instant Ramen Museum" opened in 1999 in Ikeda City in western Japan commemorating his inventions.

Ando gave a speech at the company's New Year ceremony and enjoyed Chicken Ramen for lunch with Nissin employees on Thursday before falling ill, Japan's largest daily Yomiuri reported.

He is survived by his wife, Masako.

We should use this thread for Ramen Noodle recipes. Ever had Ramen pasta? Cook the noodles, drain the water and use it for spaghetti. Tastes great when you make it after closing down the bar.

Too lazy to cook it on the stove? Microwave it in a bowl of water. 3 mins on high please.

excellent guy.
thanks for inventing Nissin and helping me through my collecge days with some wasa crisp bread..

 rip

This guy is a genius. I happen to eat alot of Nissin brand noodles too...RIP.
If anyone wants to try some different way of eating the noodles, when the noodles are finished cooking on the stove, add one or two eggs into the pot, stir around until cooked. You'll have egg in the soup and on the noodles, it's quite good...

^^ i used to do the egg thing too! and i added chopped veggies like broccoli, onion, and other spices. Those noodles sustained me through much of my college years!

I usually think about the brief lives of the tiny, bug-like, freezedried shrimp whenever I enjoy a shrimp-flavored Cup-O-Noodles, but now I will just softly say "Momofuku," over and over again, in a disturbing form of tribute.

Man, I thank him so much, I dunno what I would do without my handy-dandy Instant noodles right beside my bed.

My favorite recipe/concoction = ramen noodles with tabasco sauce & lime :ninja:

I'm broke but I eat Kraft Dinner which I consider a little more upscale. Only when I'm really hurting for cash do I eat instant noodles. RIP Ando.

I always thought they were sea monkeys (brine shrimp).

instant noodles and all the different types of mushrooms you can find

RIP, sir.

The most creative thread title ever because if I knew what it was actually about, I wouldn't have come in

I love Ramen noodles.. I ate them when I was on a budget, and now that I'm not, I still eat them once in a while. They're good :)

my recipe variation - use a little less water, and add a pat of butter. makes it infinately better.

I want some Ramen now.

OMFG! Thats one of my all time fave foods ... and I eat Nissin exclusively .. but not the ones in a cup .. the other ones ... at this moment I have five packs on my office drawer!!! IM SO SAD!

Indeed ... I ate them in college and got my fill ... I consider them totally beyond the pale now ;) I remember hearing the guys from Hootie & the Blowfish interviewed, and the question was something like, when you guys were playing the college circuit, was your ambition to be the band you are today? and one of the guys said his goal was to be able to stop eating ramen noodles  [or something along those lines]

I remember when I first had them when I was a kid at someone else's house--they were so exotic & cool :innocent:

aww, I love Ramen noodles. They're fast, cheap, and tasty. I'll probably stock up before I head off to school in a week. RIP...
