Worth it, or not, as a first designer bag? What other brands do you recommend for a classic, younger-looking, easy to match bag?

are you asking generally what you should get as a first designer bag or do you actually want an MJ bag and want opinions as to which one?

I would like a Marc Jacobs Sophia or Blake (Stella looks too big on my 5' 2" frame). However, if I could only afford one/two designer bags in my lifetime, is it worth buying an MJ bag? Otherwise what would be a good designer bag to get?

I'm petite and love big bags so I think the stella would be fine. but as between the sofia and the blake, I think the sofia is cuter.

one or two designer bags in your lifetime?? I think I would die. ^_^ but assuming that you would in fact have only one shot, I wouldn't choose an MJ bag because despite as long as they've been around, I don't think of them as "classic" bags. if I had to have only one I would pick balenciaga, but that's just me. in order to seriously play the "what if" game we need more information about you (your style, your budget, etc..)

I do like MJ bags so I'm a bit biased...of the 2 bags you mentioned---Sophia & Blake--I have the Blake and at 5ft 1 inch, I am even shorter than you but the Blake still looks good:flower: Big bags are the trend these days and don't worry, small girls can still get away with carrying big bags. Hope this helps?

While the Balenciaga is nice, I tend to see it as more of a trendy bag than a "classic" bag. My budget is less than 1000 and my style is casual - simple top or t-shirt with jeans and minimal to no makeup. I'm 23 but I look younger than my age.

Regarding MJ bags, were you referring to the Sofia (yellow) or Sophia bag? (see attached). I also like the multipocket tote with that particular hardware.

But I do agree with Meeyowsa, if I could have *only one* handbag this year (one handbag in my lifetime is kinda severe), I would get a Balenciaga bag. But then again, I like anything as long as it doesn't have logos plastered all over i.e. Louis Vuitton.

Of course I'd still get other handbags  I just don't have the money to splurge 1000 on a handbag every year. Up to 200 is what I normally pay for my handbags.

Funny that you mentioned Louis Vuitton; I was thinking of getting one but decided it looks too old for me.

Ooops, I thought you were referring to the Sophia. The yellow Sofia is lovely, I think I saw it on the Saks Fifth Ave website? I am a currently a student and one of the first designer bags I bought (with my own hard-earned money) was a MJ bag. Later on, I moved on to Balenciaga but yeah, I understand your viewpoint.

 Hate to admit it but the LV Speedy was the like the second bag I purchased after getting that first MJ bag...and I don't even use it anymore. Even though I bought it from Eluxury, people would either ask me where I got my fake or just stare because it is weird to see a college student carrying around an LV.

One in a lifetime? Chanel. Nothing else to say. A Balenciaga is no more classic than a MJ, both are going to be over within the next 3-7 years. You are talking about a real investment bag, which means you need something that has been around for a long time, and will not out anytime soon, so like I said, Chanel.

I totally disagree that balenciaga and MJ are in the same weight class, but we can agree to disagree. of course I KNEW that someone would say chanel (I'm waiting for the hermes), but chanel is not for everyone -- like me. love them, think they're timeless, but they don't work for every look. I should know -- I've owned two and got rid of them both. I've also owned several MJs and got rid of all them too. as for the sofia, I prefer the original with the regular buckles -- not a fan of the shiny silver hardware. and I do not like the one in the middle at all.

Mm I think the popularity of MJ bags isn't comparable to that of Balenciaga bags. Balenciaga bags just hit a peak in popularity recently and MJ has just been cruising alot and hasn't experienced that level of popularity in a couple of years. Maybe MJ bags will come back in a big way, maybe not... I think not though. I think Balenciaga will also hit a similar stage in it's lifespan... I think they'll always be around but not in the way that they have been recently.
I don't know if i would call them classic but I certainly think they are easy to match in that you have so many color choices and a few diff choices in terms of size and style. They're both quite easy to use, but the Balenciagas are just not very durable. When I think classic i must agree with MJ... Chanel is def a classic, as is Hermes.. Bottega Veneta makes great classic bags that are very easy to wear as well.

IMO since you are young, you should just go for what you want. A Chanel and Hermes, while being beautiful bags, are a little more mature. I almost bought the MJ Grace bag, but saw his second line's suede gathered hobo and fell in love with it. (Also at half the price!)

I love the Balenciagas, but now there are so many fake ones (esp. on Ebay) that if I see one, I immediately think that is is a fake.

i like the mj grace bag. i think it's cute:heart: the blake is very simple and young which is also good in your price range. i found that the venetia satchel is way too big for me when i went to see it in person ( considering i am 5'1 ) Anyway, i think it's a good investment on mj bags! i agree that the balenciaga is a very popular bag & that there are alot of fakes out there .. but i cannot resist on getting my hands on one this July and knowing that i own an authentic is good enough for me :p .

i also quite like the shape of the venetia...before the balenciaga, the marc jacobs venetia was my dream bag...i especially like it in that green color they had last season, i think....

Has anyone got the Marc Jacobs Dash Chain bag? What are your thoughts?
