Meet the New Girl: Carla Gebhart Is Too Busy Studyng to Model
Sixteen-year-old
Carla Gebhart's look is raw and androgynous, yet sophisticated enough to take the fall 2010 runways by storm. (We see shades of Kate Winslet circa
Heavenly Creatures, no?) After a strong debut in London, where she walked for a host of A-list designers, including
Burberry and
Christopher Kane, the Argentinean newcomer had an
Über-tight showing in Milan, walking for just three shows:
Jil Sander,
Prada, and
Gucci. In Paris, everyone from
Balenciaga to
Yves St. Laurent asked the five eleven beauty to model for their collections. After the shows ended, Gebhart was booked for spreads in Italian
Vogue, British
Vogue, and
Numéro. Shockingly, she turned them all down, instead opting to return to her hometown for final exams. You gotta love a girl who has her priorities straight.
A lot of Argentinean models worked the runways this season. Is Argentina the new Brazil?
We Argentinean girls understand the business, so I think that may be why there are more Argentinians working. Perhaps we are now having a chance, so we can begin to live up to the Brazilian models, who are very focused on being successful.
You're 16 years old. What is your advice to other young, aspiring models?
If you really want to pursue it, do so. It is fun and interesting, but it also requires patience, desire, and keeping a good mental attitude so you keep your feet on the ground.
What did you miss most about home when you were in Europe, walking for shows like Chanel and Gucci?
I missed my family and friends, and being able to go to the river or the mountains near my home. But since I love Europe so much, I really didn't miss home that much!
Would you rather have the Balenciaga campaign or the Prada campaign?
I'm greedy: Can't I have both?
