Caroline’s Sports Corner: Swedish Jersey Madness!
Hi, everyone! I’m Caroline Winberg–23 years old, a native of Sweden. Most readers of The Daily
and Chic Report
probably know me as a model, my full-time gig for the last six years. But you probably don’t know that my biggest passion in life is sports. It’s been my life since age 6–when I wasn’t on the soccer field, I’d be storming the tennis court. On sunny days, I’d run track or play beach volleyball. During the cold months, I’d hit the ski slopes until my feet were frozen, begging my parents to let me go up the lift one more time. This is my first weekly column all about la vie sportive
. I hope you like it!
Since I moved to New York, I’ve been busy working and traveling. I haven’t had the chance to run around playing sports all day like I used to as a kid. But I do take every opportunity to do something, even if it’s just playing Frisbee in the park or board games at a friend’s house after dinner. I will be writing to you every week about the sports I have watched, played or read about in the newspapers. I’ll give you my opinions, let you know who my favorite teams and players are and sometimes I’ll just show you pictures of me and my friends surfing in Costa Rica. I hope you will enjoy reading about how I combine my modeling career with my true passion for sports!
Someone stole my bag this weekend. My passport, wallet, phone–everything lost! I know that it’s all replaceable. But my biggest concern is that without a passport…I can’t go to the European Cup! For two years I’ve had this fantasy of me dressed in the Swedish national team shirt (with ‘Ibrahimović’ written on the back) while standing at a huge arena in Austria, where thousands and thousands of fans cheer for my team.
Unfortunately, my dream is crushed! Instead of being in Salzburg, Austria on the 10th of June, I’ll be at work in New York asking everyone on set if they know the scores in the Sweden-Greece game. I’ll be worried about Ibrahimović’s knee, and if our captain Ljungberg (with a broken rib and anesthesia shots) will pull the Swedish team together to beat Greece in our first game. Greece was actually a total surprise winner of the last European Cup 2004 in Portugal!
Good news for us Sweden fans: One of the best players in Greece, midfielder Giorgios Karagounis, had a knee injury in a game two weeks ago. He’s been absent from practices ever since, and the Greek coach made a statement saying he’s been in rehabilitation at the hotel. He hopes–but isn’t sure–that Karagounis will be able to play on the 10th. It’s awful that he’s injured, but it does improve our chances of winning…
I’m doing my best to get my passport back, taking passport pictures at Duane Reade and going to the embassy in NYC. It’s going to take some time, but at least on June 10th, I’ll be walking into work wearing my blue and yellow Ibrahimović sweater, wishing I was in Austria instead of New York.
