Celine Menswear S/S 2021 Paris

I'm too old to even be aware of what TikToc is??

Looks like Slimane's inspiration for this collection...is based on the character of a movie from the 1980s.... "Fast Times At Ridgemount High"....Jeff Spicoli.
Or Billie Ellish?

A third strategy change in less than three years. Lovely.

I'm seriously wondering whether they'll renew his contract or not. The pandemic must have killed the already less than stellar sales. I got a message from a SA a few weeks ago, the flashy New Bond St. mens flagship is now permanently closed.

You have to be 16 years old, wealthy and have no trust in your taste in order to buy this expensive version of a rebellious teen uniform (that rebellious teens put together in their sleep with very little means). I honestly don't understand. The clothes are great when they are authentic, put together using skate-brands, vintage, sportswear etc, but is this the Celine customer? Can someone enlighten me? Is any customer with that kind of budget really going to walk into a Celine store and buy this?

It's interesting also how Demna does a similar kind of sports/streetwear feel but he manages to make it look both relevant and uniquely Balenciaga, whereas Hedi's Celine just feels like copies of Vintage stuff that, once taken out of the Celine context could literally be any youth-oriented high street brand.

Isn't that exactly what people said about his Saint Laurent tho? Still sold like hot cakes. I'm not sure if this will be as successful, but like it or not this is where the money is today in luxury.

true, although this was Saint Lauren, still a synonym for Parisian Chic and luxury, even with the changes he made. Maybe I'm wrong, but Celine dos not have that kind of brand awareness and built-in aura of cool chic. It will be interesting to see what happens

LOL
This is slightly embarrassing and hugely desperate for Hedi to do a Gen Z collection in 2020, aimed for the TikTok audience! He even put hip-hop on the soundtrack!

Obviously, Celine is now more than far away from the 2 billions expected in sales Mr Arnault had and I hope that by the end of his contract, he will manage to reach 1,2 at least (it’s going to be tough).

This is such a step-back! The only thing interesting about Celine nowadays is literally the fragrance store in Rue Saint Honoré.

The question is: why would a young teenager buy Celine when he can have the same look from Gucci, YSL and Balenciaga? Brands that, in terms of status-symbol and aspiration values are higher than Celine today!? Because of Hedi Slimane?

Ok, the video was great (Hedi is still a showman) and the controversy will get them a lot of publicity but is it enough? Maybe Hedi needs to have Justin Bieber as the face of the brand!
I mean, his SS2005 Dior Homme collection would be more relevant today than what he just showed.

From a customer's perspective I would be happy to wear the few suiting looks that have been shown as well as some of the slouchy drop shoulder motorcycle vests - The volumes seem right and in a much toned-down styling, those pieces can age well and remain as timeless as any of Hedi's essentials from both Dior and Saint Laurent. It is getting increasingly difficult though to ignore the overall context his collections are placed in so yes - This reads as a desperate attempt to appease to a generation of customers that don't know of either Celine or Hedi Slimane.

I have to give Hedi some credit though for proposing the most convincing 80ies inspired suit - It's a tricky one to get right and a lot of designers I usually enjoy (such as Lemaire, Rick Owens or Olivier Theyskens) got the proportions very wrong - with very unflattering wide shoulders or too long and wide sleeves. The boxy shape with relatively slim shoulders and pleated trousers is a by far easier look to pull off and I think that is what customer of any age (and gender) will look good in.

Are there all these many gen-z'ers nowadays who can really afford this crap? Apart from China and Beverly Hills, I can't imagine where else HS can find that customer in groups big enough to justify the effort.
Seriously, I'd like to know, because I suspect that there are actually as many gen-x'ers (or older) who are desperate and shameless enough to get these sort of clothes - and a whiff of the lost youth along the way.
For someone smart and sensitive as Slimane is considered to be, it seems to me that he might as well have the intellectual honesty of giving up on this countercultural pose that he's tried to sell.
Tik-Tok is, if possible, even more obnoxious than IG in terms of debasement of aesthetic models and, as with Gucci, this collection is another cynical wink at the progressive infantilization of taste that the corporate culture is encouraging.
What next? Petit-Bateau couture?
