Chanel Haute Couture S/S 2021 Paris

These clothes are ridiculous. Looks like she sketched them on a magic writer and only had a couple of interns to put them together last week when she woke up in her chateau. I feel embarrassed for the atelier.

It's all over the place and not cohesive at all. Furthermore, all those looks are not aspirational enough for one of the biggest brands. I understand that Chanel needs money, hence they've been switching to an even more commercial direction, but this is just too much. What really bothers me is the lack of taste. I think Virginie might be a great designer when guided properly, but the Jill, Kiki and Amanda's looks are just wrong on so many levels.

At this point MGC is the winner. At least she tries to infuse fantasy into her collections. Virginie's fantasy is that unbearably basic bridal scene.
The thing is I really don't think Chanel should go to the more commercial direction. They made $11B last year in revenue so I'm confused.

It's hard to hear Chemz on the soundtrack because music is a big part of Chanel for me, and this song would have made so so much sense with Karl.

I'm very lost with this collection. Overall it isn't good, and that's upsetting.

Chanel for dummies: how to design a haute couture collection for the most important fashion brand on a (creative) budget...

It seems Virginie went to Pinterest to look for inspiration, because that's the "New generation's jam, dude. Lets connect with da gurls."

So she interrupted the Grand Palais renovation for this? Girl, save money for the your company and cancel your shows because they are just not worth it. I mean there are some looks that scream hey young influencers, please buy more Channel. I can't even. The cheap decor and even cheaper flower crowns. This really make me question her taste level.

I really dislike that this is becoming true: "I mean there are some looks that scream hey young influencers, please buy more Chanel." I mean I thought Chanel was supposed to be chic and not hop on trends?

Oh lord please help me what has happened to this once great brand?
Everytime I see new collection from this Virgin woman who calls herself "a designer" makes me wanna cry . This needs to stop. They need somebody who can do classic Chanel, but with a modern twist. And please no Slimane. He ruins everything he touches .

But this was the case even when Karl Lagerfeld was at the top of his game. I mean even if he did cater to influencers at least he put his own twist on it and brought far more life to the clothing than this talentless h**.

Wow, thanks, Virginie. I was going to sleep right now, and that is ruined. I can’t close my eyes now, because they hurt so much after looking at this cr*p, this will haunt me in my dreams, especially the white shirt + black tulle combination. What is that? From office clerk to my daughter’s prom?

I can’t even find a positive here. I have no idea how bad you must be to take a number of skinny, pretty girls, and make them look at least 20 kilos heavier with that total lack of waist structure on any garments. I cannot believe people actually will pay for this.

This is taste abuse, seriously, pity that there is no law that enforces firing a designer for horrid taste.

I agree. He really knew how to balance the two. He was a genius that can't be replicated. I just think Chanel doesn't want to rock the boat and now we will go through boredom with it :( They need to figure out how to make it CHANEL but with a modern twist.

I've noticed Lily Rose Depp, Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard and Charlotte Casiraghi were in attendance. Do you guys think Chanel is trying to be less accessible and more exclusive now?

They are all ambassadresses of the brand. Even if they have developed a family type relation with the house, it’s part of their duty to be there. They are trying to maintain their position in the luxury landscape. Chanel has always been about that tension between accessibility and exclusivity.
Karl’s work was quite accessible for 37 years. It was more elevated in terms of creativity but he always played with the same elements...
You don’t achieve 10 billions in sales, with sales drove by the fashion entity by being « exclusive ».

Virginie Mouzat used to say that Chanel was « very accessible and very expensive ».

So what do you think they are trying to do with Virgine? Hermes made $6B in sales and they are exclusive.

It's quite the opposite, because they're there not to sell couture, they're to sell "illusion" brand images to the commoners so they can sell more makeup and perfumes. Because a normal woman may not be afford the Chanel suit Penelope wore but she can always but the lipstick or the perfume that she the face of. Having celebrities wearing couture sometimes can be back fire because, Karl said few years ago, a couture client saw the suit that she ordered have been worn by Nicole Kidman and she cancelled the ordered immediately. But they make enough money from makeup and perfumes so couture is more like a brand building practice even if they still make profit with couture.

With Hermes they don't need "human celebrities". Their Birkin and Kelly is their best brand ambassadors. Because unless you're really important people or close with someone in the company, the chance you can buy those 2 bags is really hard. In order to buy those bags you need to invest a lot of money in Hermes like buying their RTW and accessories (silk scarves, ties, belt, etc...) and that how they make money. Hermes use the images of Birkin and Kelly to sell other products. As long as Birkin and Kelly keep being prestige Hermes can always make money.

Well to be fair if it wasn't for Grace Kelly as a princess the Kelly bag wouldn't have been known as much! But wow Hermes has a unique business model! Amazing tbh.

With Chanel then Virginie can still do some lackluster attires and it would be fine since Chanel makes most of their money from their perfumes and makeup then. But I do miss Karl since he himself was larger than life and made Chanel larger than life. Like a dream really.

The business model is very hard to repeat. Arnault always dreamed about Hermes. He tried few times buy or organised unfriendly takeover used exchange. It was failure. He decided buy Moynat and he wanted creating new Hermes but it is still niche fashion brand.
