Gainbsourg: I'm no fashion icon

Charlotte Gainsbourg thinks people seeing her as a style icon is "undeserved". The quirky actress has become a style icon thanks to her love of stand-out ensembles on the red carpet.

Despite the attention she gets for her outfit choices, Charlotte finds it baffling that anyone would look to her for tips on what to wear.

"I find this very flattering but undeserved," she shrugged to the British edition of Marie Claire.

"I don't think I'm very hip; I don't really follow fashion or what's happening there. I like getting dressed, but I'm not an eccentric. I have my own style, which is by definition a little limited."

Her latest acting gig is in provocative drama Nymphomaniac, about a woman who delves into her sexual past.

Charlotte is often nude onscreen, but admits that as she ages, she finds it harder to be comfortable in her own skin.

''I don't like ageing and I can see it happening. I find it very distressing," she said.

''Movies are getting hard for me. I don't want to be embarrassed by my appearance when I see myself on film. So I don't have a choice really, either I make peace with the fact that I'm ageing and that my face is getting harsher, or I don't and I quit acting.''

Her mother, Jane Birkin, is someone Charlotte looks to as an inspiration.

She calls her "beautiful" and praises her for not having had any cosmetic surgery, however that doesn't mean the 42-year-old will also refrain from going under the knife.

''I'm not sure I would feel completely comfortable with it, but I'm not promising I won't. For the longest time I was one of those people who thought it was important to 'stay natural' but now I'm faced with the reality of it, I'm changing my mind a bit," she confessed.

''This help... I've heard it has to be minimal, so that nobody notices, and you have to do it early on. So I don't know when, but maybe some time soon.''
