Chav Culture

Chav Fashion

Here's a website I was told about today - it has many pictures of chavs. Opinions on the trend? Is it a trend? or is it a state of mind?

www.chavscum.com

Check out the chav baby name selector. And chav of the month pics. How to spot a chav - beware of all things Burberry!

Mods - if I have posted this in the wrong thread please feel free to move it. I thought this section was most appropriate.

pardon me for my ignorance but how do you pronounce CHAV? pls. post phonetics. danke!

well up north we say charve or charver.....

CH-AR-V / CH-AR-VA obviously not said as seperate sylablls, just as its spelt really

In a way, they're like our hood rats, or what we used to call Beaters. or the male version, which is offensive, so i won't write it here.

I can't wait for the end of low-low rise jeans, if only to not have to see belly fat, ***-crack, and love handles on out of shape, junk-food swilling hoodrats.

This thread makes me feel very bad and sad.

Maybe I didn't get the charv concept ?

Are what the americans call "trailer trash" and what we ,french people, call "jeunes des cités" ("schemies boys") the same thing ?

If so it's just poor people trying to be stylish .
They have been taught by our consumerist society that the appearance is fundamental and that you have to flaunt exteriors signs of wealth to be accepted and respect/admiration worthy.

I would feel guilty mocking them actually considering the reasons of "charviness".
My english is not good enough to translate my feelings but what I mean is basically that if they had receive a decent cultural education and if they lived in decent conditions they would have better taste.

If they had better cultural icons and role model to emulate it would be better too. Because what society gives them as models ? David and Posh Beckham , Paris Hilton, reality Tv stars ...?
Society glorifies rich and mostly untalented celebrities. They just imitate them . It makes them feel they're a part of this world they dream of.
I will always prefer a charv over Paris Hilton . She's tacky.
Charvs are just sad.

Now don't get me wrong I'm not jugemental here. I don't care if you mock their lack of style . Cos really it's often funny and it's a disaster fashion wise.^_^

I think much in the same line as Jadee.

Actually I have mixed thoughts on the matter, having grown up around a lot of rednecks, and living in a neighborhood with a lot of rednecks and a lot of ******...on one hand, yes, ******, gangstas, and charvas especially look to emulate a certain style of fashion, but the cultures involve a lot more and indeed a certain lever of pain that creates the "tough guy" image.

Something that a lot of people in higher socioeconomic groups don't understand is the violence. When some big bruiser of a redneck gets drunk at a bar-b-que and starts picking fights, or when some gangsta talks about cutting somebody who crosses him, a lot of more well-to-do people assume that these guys are just like savage animals, and that the fighting is because they are like an inferior species. Instead, I posit that the football hooligans and the basketball rioters are instead substituting the possibility of wining a fight for whatver other victories are circumstantially denied them, due to the constraints of their social class. Maybe you can't get a posh job with a Christmas bonus or have a pretty house in the suburbs, but you can certainly find some punk and kick his ***. It ain't much of an accomplishment, but you hold on to whatever you can claim.

That's not saying it's fun to have to vacate a party when the enraged, hormone soaked combatants throw down, or that anyone really wants to live on the same block as inveterate vandals, but there is actually an explanation for some of the violence--it is not just plain mindless. Plus there's just an element of resentment and anger, especially when you compare your Polyester trackie against Paris's silk velveteen lounge suit or your busted-up Honda with Whitney spoilers against the suburban kid's Navigator.

Chavs would give you a handjob for a sip of your Smirnoff Ice.
You see them driving in their Mazda MX5 and Ford Fiesta with the big alloy wheels making it look like a sports car and holidaying in Ibiza and Aya Napa.

ONE THING'S FOR SURE, THEY DO KNOW HOW TO A PARTY.

If you want to see the ultimate in Chav culture, watch Channel 4's Shameless on Tuesday nights - it's just brilliant.

note to self: never use burberry travel umbrella in england, might be mistaken for a "chav" . . . oh who am i kidding, people can probably spot clueless americans from miles away too!

Love Shameless too, just to add. But I do find something a little snobby in this 'chav' thing.

This is hilarious. It seems England is different from America in the sense that the youths really take to fitting in obvious groups. You know like, Mods, Skinheads, Punk, etc..

What, then, about jocks, preps, gangstas, bikers, metalheads, geeks, rednecks, etcetera? Highly recognisable subcultures you can find anywhere in the USA.

oh, i almost forgot.. i saw this total chav girl at the mall [in bébé ] on friday, wearing burberry plaid shoes, and she had her black scottie dog in a burberry plaid tote with a little burberry plaid scarf around its neck...

British Chavs would never carry a small dog...let alone tie a scarf around it's neck (Burberry or not!) - they would be more likely to stub a cigarette out on its back then go puke :D

I was more so refering to youth culture. I guess preps and jocks would fall under this catagory, it's just that growing up in NYC the only sort of youth group I've been around were "gangsta", "ravers" and I guess "geeks". I guess I stand corrected.
