Chemical Straightening?

I have pretty curly hair but I am sick of dealing with it. I also have been tempted to get bangs for a long time, so I am thinking of getting it chemically straightened. Does anyone have any personal experience with this? What is the best kind? I know there's the Japanese thing, but I think that is super expensive. How much does it dry out/damage your hair and if I have pretty curly hair, will it really be stick straight? Thanks in advance!

The CHI straightening system works very well and makes your hair like silk. It's very expensive also.

Anything that works well and wont make hair frizzy will cost a lot of money because it takes time. The best things are done very few strands at a time and therefore requires the specialist to spend atleast 5 to 10 hours on on head of hair.

You're basically paying for the stylist's time.

I've tried X-Tenso by L'Oreal and I'm really happy with it... my hair is softer and tamed, and it's a lot cheaper than the Japanese straightening method.

ive been wanting to talk to someone who has done the CHI straightening system..

did it make your hair EXTREMELY straight? like not able to flip it out or curl it or anything after?

also wondering what you do once it starts to grow out... I was thinking of straightening the roots for a while, and then perming it so it grows out curly and just back to normal. But I can't imagine how much damage that would do to your hair

hey i have no personal experience with it myself but my flatmate uses X-Tenso by Loreal (that spookygirl mentioned) and she swears by it. it doesnt dry her hair AT ALL, its actually really soft and she had serious afro curls before (ive seen pics), now it even blow-drys straight and doesnt frizz in the rain.

it is fairly costly though (not sure exactly how much as her hairdresser gives her a discount), and she has to have it done regularly to maintain it, but after 2-3goes she said it was near perfect.

One last question, haha just wondering, when I was thinking about getting it straightened, I pictured air-drying the hair and it would just dry perfectly straight. Would it still need a blow-dry? I don't do blowdrys now so that might be a problem... Thanks again for the advice.

I've done it. It does make hair very straight if you just let it dry naturally. You can flip it out while blowdrying...or curl it under.

You can basically do anything with the hair with a blow dryer or curling iron.

I also wana bout this coz I have super dry nd super frizzy hair...bcoz of all those chemical treatments that I had gone through in the past... anyway, is ur flatmate's hair stick straight now or is it still bouncy and still has body?

young_princess, it is very short (chin length) so she always pulls it very straight (with added use of straighteners), but when its just dried it has plenty of body still. looks very healthy anyhow

Well I am african american and have been having my hair chemically straightened for years! Its really hard on your hair, you have to make sure it is constantly moisturized. When most african americans chemically straighten their hair it falls out the first time cause you have to get used to taking extra special care of it.
I would do a test piece first see how your hair reacts to it, then do the whole head.

Yes...and with lots of volume. It didn't make my hair ultra straight though (probably because it was very curly), I only get my hair really straight if I blow dry it. If I leave it to dry naturally, it gets some really larges waves (wich I prefer, actually). The only problem are the roots...the hair grows curled again (obviously ) and the curlier it is, the more noticeable the roots are... But you can go periodically to the hairdresser and apply X-Tenso only in the roots - I do that, and I only need to apply it again every 3 months or so...
What I like most about this method is that it doesn't dry the hair at all, I think it made mine softer...and the volume reduction is really umbelievable.

I got my hair chemically straightened a 4 months ago and its still quite straight but not stick straight. It did dry out my hair though and sometimes my hair curls at the front but it is worth it.

hey guys, i do Chi straightening. my hairs about bra strap length right now and my hairstylist gave me a DEAL, it was still $500 hehe. also i have alot of highlights so she had to use a special chemical for highlighted hair. anyway, my hair is extremely thick, and it wasnt that curly to begin with but it was wavy and no way to do alot with it. the chi makes it straight as a needle and SOFT as silk. 100% manageable. would reccomend it to anyone, and i saw some pics before i did it, girls with wicked curly/frizz had the same results as me. only thing is the money. and its the opposit of a perm, your roots will grow out and it will look wierd unless u keep getting it done, and its like $250 a pop for touch ups every few months. i know someone at my work who did their own with some oglevee over the counter product. she did it about 3 times and hers is almost as straight as mine. but its much shorter. might be worth it to go that route

I'm African American but I no longer receive chemical treatments. I'm living the press n curl lifestyle now...that's another story but if you do get chemical make sure you get a pro or try a natural hairstylist. There may be another alternative like I heard of something called naturelaxers which may be healthier for the hair, so they say.

im not sure if anyones still interested, but theres a korean straightening system called magic perm, that not only straightens hair but it also redos a great amount of previous damage. my sister has gotten it done last year and her hair was pretty damaged from dying, flat ironing, blowdrying, etc. and it looked SOOO healthy and straight. it lasts for about a year or so, so shes going back in tomorrow to get it done again. for me, i think its pretty expensive(but that might be because im 15 and live off of allowance and babysitting money ), but it usually runs from about $200-300. almost any korean hair salon offers this treatment.

i love having my hair stick straight and shiny

they run anywhere from 200 USD to like 1000 USD depending where you go and its best to usually get it from an asian salon or stylist i think
