well i love chinese fashion style....it can be really beautiful and unique....but some styles are not that good though

Ok...this is a bit of a shameless plug because she is my cousin but I thought I'd garner some TFS attention for this designer. She used to design for Shanghai Tang but she started her own collection two years ago.

She's stocked at Selfridges in London and other boutiques.

She takes oriental influences to give a contemporary look. Her clothes are super girly and I can testify to the superior quality (seeing as she gave me a whole load of freebies ).

hey susie_buble! I am actually so impressed by Elizabeth Lau's clothes!! I have 2 pieces by her and they are absolutely lovely!

When it comes to the Chinese styles...I think its very hard for anyone to truly capture it....What does it take to wear a qi pao? For me, I have learnt it the hard way, it takes elegance, sophistication and grace and not alot of people can wear it well. How modern can it be? I can not imagine.

As for the Chinese "water sleeves", I have asked my tailors and some HK designers to produce clothings like it, and yet, the feedbacks I received are, as always, ohhh! this Japanese styled dress is very cute...blah blah blah...

And as for the modern Chinese style... I think of the shop on the 3rd floor of On Pedder Building in Hong Kong...very discreet, elegent, attentive to details and not flashy at all; just like how most Chinese noblemen aimed to be.

I think Chinese style is more delicate, more slim, more intricate, and cut to flatter slender and petite figures. Like qipaos. I hate it when the women wear too 'Western' clothing because they look so out of place.

i agree. not many women can wear qi pao properly not only because of the figure but also the way to express the cultural dress as a sign of traditional Chinese elegance.

yah, i agree, especially in the movie "In the Mood for Love". Those Qi Pao were specially made for this movie. Very classic and elegant...

anyway i guess that chinese fashion needs to find some leading designers...like some japanese designers (rei kawakubo, yohji yamamoto, kenzo...) have made their first steps into the industy in Paris...opening the road to other brands...

there are no strictly chinese men's brands but you can try:

shiatzy chen : this is a taiwan brand which is expanding very aggressively overseas (incl a shop on rue des saint honores in paris) and focuses very much on craft, material and cutting... one of the only ones i've come across that are really researching into different cuttings and patterns of 'chinese-inspired' clothing; all others such as shanghai tang, blanc de chine just take traditional patterns and make them in different fabrics and colours... very much for tourists. the catch with shiatzy men is that i think only about 10% of the items have 'edge'; all the others somehow are quite right. you can check out their website: www.shiatzychen.com
