Christy Turlington

CHRISTY TURLINGTON'S ANTI-AGING SECRET
By Sophie Bloomfield on Jun 17, 2014

Imedeen Time Perfection is the perfect example of something that doesn’t need to be new to be brilliant. In fact, this carefully-calibrated skincare supplement could well be called something of a ‘cult’ product thanks to the legions of devotees whom swear to its efficacy.

The latest face (and rather perfect face at that, for who wouldn’t want such supermodel skin?) to testify to "the Imedeen effect" is Christy Turlington—we caught up to discuss how she achieves that beautiful glow:

Harper's BAZAAR: How do you approach the whole concept of ‘beauty from within?'
Christy Turlington: As I’ve got older I’ve really experienced first hand that what you put in your body is ultimately what comes through; we should really understand about beauty that it is something we can cultivate and grow by what we put into our bodies.

HB: Was there a particular turning point for you towards realizing this?
CT: I started modeling at 14 and smoked in my teens and twenties: there was a point when I was about 25 that I realized the negative effect on the way it made me feel. As soon as I quit smoking I felt invincible: I applied to school again and had four incredible years of studying in New York, which is also when I got really into yoga, which supported my understanding of taking better care of myself.

HB: Does your yoga practice affect what you put in your body?
CT: Yes but not in such a strict way as you might think. I think that moderation is fine. I also tend to be attracted to healthier foods; I have never been one to binge eat or starve myself. I do cleanse once a year and have done since my twenties, usually when it is hotter: I naturally want to eat clean, raw foods for a few days or a week, plus plenty of vegetable juices.

HB: Now that you’re the face of Imedeen, how does your philosophy to beauty and wellbeing relate to this?
CT: Your skin is the biggest organ of your body; in the same what that ‘you are what you eat’, whatever you put into your body is impacted by what you put in it. I used to have a skincare business years ago and have had a lot of education about this – I truly believe in and understand what the right supplements can do.

HB: So have you always taken lots of supplements?
CT: No, I have not always been into supplements. I took a pre-natal vitamin when I was pregnant which I continued to take for years, plus omegas, but I had otherwise chosen to find my vitamins and minerals through food. However, what is unique about Imedeen is that it really is specific to skin regeneration and it is incredibly difficult to access its ingredients through the diet alone. It’s all I’ve taken for the last 6 months—two tablets every morning as soon as I’ve brushed my teeth—and I have definitely noticed an improvement in the quality of my skin. Particularly its hydration—it used to get dry, but now much less so.

HB: Do you use particular skincare to address this, too?
CT: I do use skincare but I’m less loyal to this than taking the Imedeen; I get the results with Imedeen whereas with creams I think we want to see this huge difference with them in a fast timeframe but the reality can be less straight forwards. As long as its natural and smells good I’ll try anything. I like a lot of the pharmacy brands as they don’t contain a lot of additives, plus natural or organic products are something I always favor.

HB: Are there any other foods or supplements you take?
CT: All omega oils, plus nuts, seeds and avocados all make me feel great. A also like sea salt, olive oil and lemon juice on every vegetable that I eat. I do take probiotics, too; your internal health is vital as most sicknesses like colds start in the stomach.

HB: You have been a vegetarian in the past. Why did you stop?
CT: I do still eat a lot of vegetable-based meals and was really into being vegetarian when I was starting to get into yoga seriously, but when I was pregnant I started craving protein. Yoga very much teaches you to listen to your body, I followed what I felt I needed. I don’t eat meat excessively but when I do it has to be grass fed and organic.

HB: Do you still practice yoga?
CT: Yes, at least a couple of times a week. It gives you so much more than just physical activity; it incorporates mediation and self-massage.
