Veronique Branquinho FW06
June 29, 2006 – Are you cable-ready? With fall's sweater weather in mind, designers have revived the classic stitch. Michael Kors went long, turning a collegiate-style Aran topper into a minidress, while Balenciaga's Nicolas Ghesquière played with volume, pairing a chunky, plaited top with a bell-shaped mini. Alexander McQueen's Highland fling of a collection wouldn't have been complete without something woolly—the designer offered sweeping cardigans, as well as snazzy knit socks sure to cause envy among the bagpiper set.
"Classic elements, reproportioned," is how Chaiken creative director Jeff Mahshie described his fall collection, which featured a rather revealing chiffon-and-cashmere take on the iconic fisherman cable. Antonio Berardi, meanwhile, found another way to sex up the sweater: He went flash, encrusting his hearty knits with Swarovski crystals.
