There’s a state (in France) croisade against Ultra High Fashion brands (which is in reality a way to stop Chinese implantation).
It became a scandal when SHEIN bought the services of an ex-minister to do some lobbying. It didn’t went well.

BHV has a new owner and he wanted to make a coup so, he decided to host the first standing store for SHEIN in Paris. France I think is their first market in Europe if I remember well.

Of course SHEIN wanted to be in the Capital of fashion. The BHV is in a good shopping area and it allow can elevate the perception of SHEIN (that’s what they though anyway).

Behind the small air of class battle that the owner of the BHV tried to instrumentalized against people (BHV is in a bourgeois area of Paris where people from the suburbs rarely comes to shop), it was a hit first because there were queues but quickly, shoppers realized that SHEIN was more expensive than online and they are aware of the quality anyway. There were fine paying 5€ for a sweater but paying 30€ for the same thing: No!

On top of those controversies, brands didn’t want to be associated with BHV anymore. Some didn’t want to be associated with SHEIN and others had payment issues with BHV and used that opportunity to leave.

Now because of all those controversies, the ridiculousness of the new owner, the circulation has dropped and brands are not coming back…Galeries Lafayette is contemplating selling the BHV and for now the expansion of SHEIN all over the country is stopped.

^ Thanks for the infos Runner. Not reclusive but she’s for sure an introvert, but I still find her more open than Junya, for example. I don't remember the last time she came out to bow at the end of a show, probably in the late 90s or early 00s sth?
when japan was the most profitable place for LV, H, C, etc, you saw karl strut, leading yasmeen ghauri, naomi, etc around ginza, and thought it is not so cool for a designer to be louder than their work and models.

junya's idea is, basically, seeing is believing, letting his pieces speak, the work is everything type. but I think it's not so difficult to find interviews online.

because of the nature of her country's culture, it's inevitable to communicate with lots of people of various kinds on a daily basis, if you are someone who handles that scale of company (about 1000 employees). attending parties, ceremonies, (including her own wedding at the ritz), apart from the profession as a designer. so, even if you actually are introvert and taciturn, you have to force yourself to be somewhat extrovert. and she can't go a day without controlling and touching everything. maybe she admits she is a workaholic.
she says, "only the comme spirit (aka what jeanclaude calls obsession) is getting bigger and bigger, while I'm powerless."
and laughs at herself. subtly though.

Not a controversial opinion but talking about Rei Kawakubo.

It is always funny to me how she pretends not to speak English. I forgot the person involved, but they met and spoke with Kawakubo in the 1980s and met her again in the 2010s, only to suddenly have to speak through a translator. The interaction basically went like this
a woman wearing glasses and a black shirt is sitting in front of a window with blinds

for example, the trouble in the 90's with jewish community.
maybe she thought her english needs more of precision.

Azzedine was the same. Surrounded by English speaking people since the 80s but never spoke English. Worked with Italians for years never spoke Italian lol.

I wonder if it’s not a power play ahaha.

^^^ You jest-- but powerplay absolutely has a part in why these people choose to not speak english when they can: Ego is a powerful plague in this industry— even amongst the nobodies. But, maybe their lack of the fluency and expression of ESL— with the added potential of being filmed and their own insecurity, self-consciousness in front of a camera/crowd could very well be a determining factor as to why they prefer to speak the language that they’re comfortable/confident in. I get the impression that you may forget at times how impressively expressive, fluent and eloquent your post comes across, despite English being your secondary language; and it’s not an exaggeration to say you speak english as well as you write it. I can understand french/mandarin/cantonese much better than I can speak those languages; and frankly, it’s only just casually— and not at all on a professional level. I wouldn’t feel at all comfortable and confident speaking those languages in a presentation to a group of people that are native in those languages, let alone while being filmed. And sometimes we’re deathly insecure of our accents when speaking a secondary language in certain situations. Of course you sound hypnotic speaking english with your Parisian perfume accent (…I can listen to Carine and Hedi speak english nonstop— but an ex who is French-Canadian, his accent was near grating…while another ex who is from Strasbourg, had that accent and voice that could get me to do anything for him). But when I speak french, not only will it come across unpleasant, but there’s that French-Canadian accent to boot LMFAO And let’s be frank, some accents sound like nail on chalkboard when they’re speaking english, so I absolutely understand Rei and Azzedine not speaking it in public (…And didn't Giorgio understand English perfectly but chooses not to speak it?). We’re not all as blessed to possess your immaculate accent, Lola.

(To stay on topic: Some person named Dostoevsky once wrote “tolerance will reach such a level that intelligent people will be banned from thinking so as not to offend the imbeciles.” Not only has this been the standard of high fashion now, but a reality in western liberal society. It’s sadly, frighteningly-- and hilariously a fulfilled omen at last: Queers for Palestine will stand as the pinnacle of that untouchable stupidity— and hilarity. Make common sense, logic and reason-- and in the context of high fashion, creative talent… great again.)
