Madonna: "We Still Live in a Very Sexist Society That Wants to Limit People"
Madonna sits down with Cosmopolitan to celebrate 50 years of power, provocation, and living that Cosmo-girl life.

In May 1990, Madonna posed as the cover star of Cosmo's 25th anniversary issue. Now, 25 years later, the icon sits down with the magazine to celebrate 50 years of power, provocation, and living that Cosmo-girl life. The May issue features not one, but four different covers of Madonna, on stands April 14.

On longevity in her career: "Popularity comes and goes. You need to know who you are, what you stand for, and why you're here."

On sexuality and ageism: "Don't be fooled, not much has changed — certainly not for women. We still live in a very sexist society that wants to limit people. Since I started, I've had people giving me a hard time because they didn't think you could be sexual or have sexuality or sensuality in your work and be intelligent at the same time. For me, the fight has never ended."

On collaborating with Kanye West on her album Rebel Heart: "It's a little bit of a bullfight, but we take turns. He knows that he's walking into a room with a person with a strong point of view, and I do too. I listen to what he has to say, take it in, and he listens to what I say and takes it in. We didn't agree on everything, but he has good ideas."

On Internet haters: "You can hide behind your computer or your phone and say whatever you want — you're not known. Could you say it to my face? Would you say it to my face? I doubt it."

Its a well tested formula for Madonna to be presented like this, at this point in her career. Its so very interesting that not even Cosmo could break away with that. Shows how much power she has.

On the other hand, i do like that 25 years later, she is back on the cover, true Icon!

Beautiful. I like the shoot on the chair and the one with cake.
25 years later again on the celebration issue. What a true artist. <3

I love Madonna and I think it's kind of wonderful that Cosmo of all magazines would feature the same woman on the cover of the 25th and 50th Anniversary issues. That said, I don't particularly care for the photo of her with the mask. I respect Madonna's refusal to adhere to what's considered normal for women her age, but at the same time I wish her current idea of what's sexy was a little more in line with my own. The costumes, masks, crucifixes, etc. reminds me of things Madonna has been doing so long other artist have copied her with success and moved on to other images and now they feel stale. I guess to be completely clear, I just wish Madonna would innovate like she used to, instead of borrowing from her usual bag of tricks. This is the exact type of image I expected to see when I clicked on the thread, and that saddens me. I'm interested to see the other covers. I like the cover from 1990.

Sex and Madonna are two things I would never want to associate with one another.

All great shots, nothing too original, but still great.

Only Queen Madonna, I really like the cover with bunny ears.

Like I said in the Cosmo thread, the plain backgrounds are their signature so to go way with it, for me, looses the identity of the magazine. This is a step toward the wrong direction. It looks like a fan wanted a cover for her but couldn't find the exact Cosmo fonts and a shot of her on a plain background, thus the result.

Why does Cosmo get their own thread? This was posted in the Cosmo Worldwide Thread already.

Oh I love the bunny ears cover! It's a nice departure for Cosmo and for Madonna to be portrayed as a bit silly and fun. Also we made it a full page with no one taking a shot at her age so kudos, didn't think some of TFS had it in them!

Can't she do anything else?! For years she hasn't had any interesting pics. Move on!

Awful cover layout.
I wish she would change her image already, for how many years has she been doing this aesthetic? 15 years or so?
My favorite pics are the ones where she´s styled with other than lingerie.

The fact that a public person manages to stay in the spotlight and snag covers 25 years ago and today, says a lot.
