Curtains - whats your style?

I like venetian blinds...
there are these ones at my parents' when at night they block out all the light but they're silver, so when the sun rises the next morning, it gets fairly bright in the room despite the blinds being closed.
At my current place, I have dark curtains but in the morning they are too dark that I can't tell what time of the morning it is... so I always end up sleeping in :ninja:

gius, I was mostly referring to the shape and style of the curtains (the material/fabric kind ones).

I will be installing roller shutters on all big windows in my house in order to keep the hot air out in summer and cool weather in winter. But for the look factor I thought I had to have curtains as well. What do you think?

I quite like these:

I'm boring. I like long, semi-sheer white curtains that will move in the wind.

^oh, me too ilaughead!. :woot:
..I love extra long, white sheer lace curtains, they're not very safe when the lights go off as they can be very see-through but they look gorgeous during the day.. I guess they work better in not-very-private places like the dining room.. which, in my opinion, should always be filled with light :p . we have those in my house, in both the dining room and the books? room, which are both my favorite places, I can just sit on the floor for hours, reading and seeing them blow.. :ninja:

I think the type of window treatment can really depend on which room of the house you are in are like mullet and gius were mentioning, how much light you need/want

In a bedroom you might want something versatile, so that you can block out light and sleep in the morning/get privacy at night, but also be able to easily open them and not live in gloom for the rest of the day.

I think with shutters lighter treatments work well--so more sheer, not too heavy fabrics

I'll see if I can find some pictures to post of what I like--or even just some general examples... I work for a high-end home magazine so I should be able to fine some stuff :p

I'm always fond of the curtains that puddle at the bottom on the floor.. Don't know why.

I'm moving into a loft soon that has floor to ceiling windows, which will be interesting. The problem is I cannot find the window treatments that I want anywhere! The place has an industrial feel, with exposed duct work and stained cement flooring. It's not in the greatest part of town either, so I want heavy curtains that I can draw closed, also I'm considering sewing a blackout fabric to the back of them. I'm thinking out loud...but really if anyone knows of an good website that has a nice selection of graphic style drapes that would be very cool. I've searched all night but to no avail. I suppose I could make my own as well.

^^it sounds like your best option may be to make your own if you are handy with a sewing machine..
you could pick out some great fabric and depending on how heavy/thick it is you may not have to add that blackout fabric..

it's very tough to find things for windows that are unconventionally sized..

I tend to leave windows free of coverings but I do have a sheer brown linen curtain on the slider doors.

I always loved rooms with big billowy sea-blown sheer curtains, it just reminds of the warm sunny beach breezes.

^ I agree about the sheer curtains. They're especially great if you can open the window and let some of the breeze in, or if the sun shines through them (like in the pictures below).

i love the long sheer breezy curtains as described above..in my little apartment i have mint green silk ones in the bedroom and in the living room a beautiful chocolate brown silk to complement the tan couch and light wood floors. in the morning the sun shines through the mint green and gives the room a very lovely feel...and they were not expensive because i bought the fabric and sewed them myself

Here's a quick shot of the curtains I have up at the moment (I have another pair of solid gray curtains with a bit of a sheen which I will probably put up in summer).

eta; The curtains aren't printed, the maroon pattern is a velvet burnout over some sort of silk/synthetic fabric combination

I'd love to have billowy sheer curtains on my big windows, but I can't as my husband is allergic to dust. We don't even have rugs or carpets. I do have a pair of blue string curtains that cover my home office (read office the size of a medium sized closet) opening.

They do the job of shutting in the sometimes---ok, often---messy space, but every once in awhile we get caught in the strings and get slightly choked.
