A champion of black women and black hair, Jamaica-born Cyndia Harvey is shaking up high-fashion styling
AGE 31
LOCATION London, United Kingdom
London-based hair stylist Cyndia Harvey’s raison d’être is to represent the entire spectrum of beauty – to utilise her skills to fight for the visibility of underrepresented groups of people. Harvey, who was born in Jamaica and moved to London aged 11, first learned how to style hair from her mother – garnering an authentic perspective that’s led her to become one of the most exciting hair stylists working today. Last year, Harvey presented the film project This Hair of Mine – a personal exploration of the African diaspora through hair. For the film, Harvey researched each of her subjects’ tribal heritage and reinterpreted their traditional hairstyles as a celebration of the pride, power and beauty of black women. Her bold visions for inclusive beauty has led to her working on campaigns for Kenzo, DKNY and Calvin Klein and with bold personalities including Kendrick Lamar, FKA Twigs, Grace Coddington and Adwoa Aboah.
