"Daisy Edgar-Jones was shooting the Fox/Canal+ miniseries War Of The Worlds in Cardiff when she received the call to submit a self-tape for the role of Marianne Sheridan in Element Pictures’ Normal People.

“It turned out that one of our quite difficult scenes ran over so I had to do [the tape] at lunchtime,” Edgar-Jones recalls. “I’d spent most of the morning wailing, covered in fake blood.”

The tape landed her a spot in the final pool of actresses performing chemistry reads with Paul Mescal in Dublin. “That was honestly one of the scariest days of my life,” she says. “I was so full of adrenaline.”

The untypically long audition — “It felt like an eternity, but it was probably 30 or 40 minutes” — went well, and three days later Edgar-Jones heard she had secured the role. “Three torturous days,” she recalls. “It was quite strange. I woke up thinking about it. I just couldn’t stop thinking about it because I wanted it so much.”

Unlike Mescal, whose previous experience was essentially on stage, the 22-year-old north Londoner was already a seasoned screen actress, with credits including four seasons of TV’s Cold Feet, episodes ofGentleman Jack and Silent Witness, and 2018 UK indie film Pond Life, which is adapted from Richard Cameron’s stage play.

Growing up an only child with a TV executive father and a mother who had put on hold her career as a film and television editor, Edgar-Jones developed an early passion for drama, performing in school plays from the age of 10, and spending her teenage summers with the National Youth Theatre. “I always just enjoyed that process of pretending to be someone else and trying to think about their perspective on life and the way they think about things,” she says.

Normal People has taken Edgar-Jones to a new stage in her career, including scripts now arriving with firm offers attached (“That’s a very new thing”). Announced in September is the lead in Legendary’s Fresh, described as a “social thriller”, written by Lauryn Kahn, directed by Mimi Cave and produced by Adam McKay and Kevin Messick."

Was there only one autumnal shot of her in Bazaar UK? It was so good. Love the video as well. Utterly charming... other than that secret talent which will haunt me for a while!!

I know this is OT, but I can't decide, if I should watch Normal People or not. I'm halfway through episode 2, but I'm really hesitant, because I've read the book, and I'm not sure I'm willing to put myself through that twice just for an open-ending. I do love Daisy though & think she's super talented, which is part of the reason I'm kind of interested in the series. Has anyone else read the book first & then watched the show? Thoughts? Should I do it? Thank you!

I read the book before the watching it, and thought the open-ending actually worked better for the show. Also there is buzz of a Normal People sequel for the show!

“Daisy Edgar-Jones has landed the leading role in the film adaptation of the bestselling book Where the Crawdads Sing.

The Normal People actress, 22, will star as the main character Kya in the movie that is based on the novel by Delia Owens set in America's Deep South.” —dailymail.co.uk

Awesome news, thanks puresoul!! Felt like her costar in Normal People, Paul Mescal, got all the kudos, but Daisy seems way more versatile to me.

DAISY EDGAR-JONES for The Hollywood Reporter, Next Generation Issue 2020
"Daisy Edgar-Jones, 22
She’s not a total newcomer, thanks to roles in HBO’s Gentleman Jack, a War of the Worlds TV remake and much-loved British series Cold Feet, but the Londoner’s career was catapulted skyward with the debut of Hulu’s Normal People. Although she’s experienced much of her breakout from the confines of her flat amid the pandemic, the geographical limitations haven’t seemed to do her any harm. She’s secured lead roles in Where the Crawdads Sing, from Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine, and Legendary’s social thriller Fresh, produced by Adam McKay.
If I learned one thing about myself during the quarantine it’s … "I like routine."
I'd love to star in a remake of ... "Maybe The Importance of Being Earnest. They’ve not done that for a while."
The person I'm dying to work with ... "I'm currently watching The Undoing with Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant and I just love Nicole Kidman. It’d be ridiculously cool to be able to work with her."
I hope I don't get typecast as ... "I hope I don't play vulnerable characters all the time. I’d like to play some tough ones."
The moment I felt I made it … "I don't know if you ever really feel you've made it. It’s hard to define. But when the show came out and I saw the response to it, I was like, 'Oh gosh, I think maybe I've made something that people really like."
Onscreen character I most identified with as a kid ... "I loved Anne of Green Gables."
My most embarrassing audition story ... "There's so many, but probably when I did an audition for a Domino's commercial and didn't realize that the requirement was for us to snog a random stranger in a room full of people. So that was unexpected and quite mortifying. I didn’t get the gig."
The thing I miss most about the pre-COVID world is … “I normally hate the Tube in rush hour, but I would love nothing more than to be in someone’s smelly armpit.”"
