^Studying medicine in the USA is different from Europe (not sure about the rest of the world). Students get Pre-medicine degrees in their undergraduate years, and medical school comes after that. Most major in relevant fields during their undergrad years, such as chemistry or biology. But it's also possible to study something not directly related to medicine, and take science-based subjects as electives. You can also do a double major (equal amount of credits, usually takes more than 4 years) or a minor (fewer credits than your major) in pre-med and something completely different.
