There is a tall girl in the doorway,She’s taller than anyone around. She has big alien eyes and shiny golden hair. The simple clothes hide, not flatter her figure, and her walk is modest. Many visitors of Vogue café don’t even notice the arrival of the runway goddess.
(We’re looking at the menu) What are you going to have? Oh, I’ll have borscht (clearly pronounces the word). I’m in Moscow, and the first thing I want to eat, is my favourite borscht.
Is it because of your Ukrainian background? Of course, I love Ukrainian food and I can cook pirozhki (a baked closed pie type thing), pierogi, and borscht.
Can you speak Ukrainian? Says, “I speak Ukrainian” in Ukrainian (switches back to English). I understand a little bit of Russian, but I don’t speak it. And you know, it’s so wonderful that everyone here pronounces my name correctly.
I bet your parents call you Dashenka at home? No, Daria. Even though my family has a Ukrainian background, we’re from Poland. When I was very little, we moved to Canada. There, I went to a Ukrainian school, and my family kept all the traditions.
By the way, happy birthday! A couple of days ago you turned…? Can you imagine, I’m already 22!
Yes…that’s a serious age. When do you think a woman can no longer answer that question? I don’t know. I started my career when I was 13, so I feel much older. I don’t think one should lie anyway. Do you always tell the truth?
Always, except when the guy is younger. Then, I don’t say anything. (they laugh). What kind of guys do you like? Handsome and talented. And I also promised myself I wouldn’t date men shorter than myself. But, I’m usually a little taller. The main thing is that he has to be a man of mystery. Do you have any princes among Russian men?
Of all the things, our men can’t be mysterious. So, basically one of the most beautiful women in the world is single? I recently broke up with my boyfriend. You know, it’s practically impossible. One day I’m in Brazil, the next, I’m in Paris, not one man can be patient enough.
A Russian man can easily wait, and he’ll send a plane for you. No, I like the free life that I have right now. I don’t want to think about a serious relationship. It’s so cool to be in snowy Russia on my birthday. I just can’t believe it!
All the top models have similar problems. I should think that as a little girl, you were odd and played soccer with the boys? Exactly right. But except soccer, I had my father’s yacht. When everyone looked at me on the street, I thought it was because my face was dirty or I looked life a fool.
And now, you understand that you’re beautiful? To be honest, no. I was just very lucky, and I want this to last as long as possible.
What’s next? I’m into painting, I paint. The world is fully of amazing artists. Every place I go to, I visit a local museum. You know, I want to change the stereotype of a model. We’re not all dumb.
We never thought so. We’re just jealous of your beauty. And I bet you eat everything you want. Lately, not so much, because I fell like I’m at that age…I even started to do sports.

Thanks for sharing Gina. Now, I know what I wanna do this summer. Ill be with those kids learning how to sail at the Port Credit Yacht Club on Lake Ontario. (Only if Daria were the camp counsellor thou!!)
