I'm wondering if walking for Versace was part of some contract that coincided with her previous ad campaign with them?

Probably. I think it is likely that it was in her contract to walk a season exclusively for them. But she had a Cavalli exclusive last season so she couldn't do it, which is probably why it got pushed back to this season.
