Daria Werbowy

As far as the potential supermodel thing goes, I hear a lot of conflicting things from her. On one hand, I agree with eword that she sort of resents the whole modeling thing, the fact that her looks have to be such an essential part of her success; she calls the industy pretentious in interviews and doesn't seem to relish the spotlight. On the other hand, I've heard her say the same things that I've heard Gisele say; that actresses take away from models, that models should get more recognition, that it's ok for models to delve into acting, etc.

So I guess time will tell if she can cross over or not. I hope she does, not because I want everyone to know her name, but just because the only other option would be for her to quit or fade away. She's already conquered everything fashion has to offer.

FALL 2006 RTW WRAP-UP: MODELS
Daria Werbowy on Fendi

"The clothes are really rock 'n' roll, but they've got a very interesting mix between that and classiness. Karl's a genius, he keeps going and going and going, and it's just phenomenal. He's just a black hole of knowledge, anything and everything you can talk to him about. He's pleasant to everyone, he's curious about you, and he's interested in your life, as well."

Interview from the Toronto Sun 3-10-06

Daria enchants

Local beauty returns home as the new face of Lancome
By SYLVI CAPELACI, STYLE EDITOR
Daria Werbowy feels like she won a genetic lottery.
But it takes more than a fabulous face with piercing green cat's eyes to be fashion's "it" model of the moment.
In a chatty interview in Toronto yesterday as the new face of Lancome, Werbowy talked about her life and goals.
The 22-year-old, Polish-born, Mississauga-reared beauty started modelling locally eight years ago. Only in the past three years since the fickle fashion world grew tired of Brazilian bombshells and models in rehab did it turn an eye on Werbowy's aura of Bohemian-hippie chicness.
PLUM CAMPAIGNS
To date, she's graced the cover of 60 fashion magazines, she's starred in plum Prada, Gucci, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent ad campaigns and in 2005 opened and closed a record-breaking 12 designers runway shows during one season. Not bad if speculation is true in that she can command up to $20,000 per catwalk appearance -- heck, Linda Evangelista would get out of bed for less.
But that's all chump-change compared to Werbowy's latest conquest -- a multi-year deal with Lancome beauty brand.
If you didn't recognize her before, you will now -- her gorgeous mug is splashed across billboards and at beauty counters worldwide as ambassador for Lancome's newest fragrance Hypnose and its colour collection The Enchantress.
In the modelling world, it doesn't get any bigger or better -- a gig like this would be, for mere mortals, the equivalent of winning a cash-for-life lottery.
Q: NOW THAT YOU'VE REACHED MODELLING'S TOP SPOT, WHAT'S NEXT?
A: I got to a point in my career that I never thought I'd get to, I already reached the goals I had. So I'm taking it as it comes and seeing what other doors it opens. I wouldn't mind trying acting, it's a beautiful way of expression. Whether I'd be good at it or not ....
Also art is definitely something I'm going to be working at my whole life. It's my outlet. It gives me solace and comfort to be able to sit backstage on my own and draw ink sketches and let everything come out through my hands.
Q: YOU HAVE A REPUTATION OF ALWAYS BEING "NICE." DO YOU EVER LOSE YOUR COOL?
A: Nice is such a terrible word. Believe me there are times when I'm not that nice. It's really emotional backstage when you're being pushed around, poked and prodded. I might say something rude and automatically you're going to think 'ah man she's awful.' But really you just caught me in a moment.
Q: THE MILLION-DOLLAR QUESTION, DO YOU HAVE A BOYFRIEND?
A: I have to keep some things a mystery, right?
Q: YOU'VE MET MEN WORLDWIDE, WHAT DO YOU THINK OF T.O.'S HOMEGROWN GUYS?
A: Toronto men are very, very mysterious. It's like they come out in the summertime and then hibernate in the winter. I think there is definitely something really easy and down-to-earth about Toronto men and they're really handsome. I just can't find any of them who like me.
Q: DESCRIBE YOUR AVERAGE DAY LOOK.
A: Comfort first. T-shirts. I'm a jean collector, but lost count after 60 pairs. I still have one pair from high school. I love fashion and expressing myself through it, but I take it with a grain of salt and laugh at it. I don't take it that seriously, but I do enjoy it.
Q: HOW DO YOU STAY IN SHAPE?
A: I go to the gym. I always played sports growing up -- rugby, basketball and I sailed my whole life, so when I can't do those things I try to go for a run. Running is good for the mind -- it's nice when you get to that point when you don't even realize you're running anymore.
Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING TO DO?
A: Sailing is closest to my heart. It's kind of a passed on passion from my dad. I went to sailing school since I was nine, started teaching when I was 16 and did that for four years. I want to sail around the world when I'm 27. That's the magic number -- hopefully I'll have my mid-life crisis in the middle of the Atlantic ocean. (Not at age 27, we hope?)
Q: WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST BIZARRE MODELLING MOMENT?
A: Being stuck in a mirrored box for six hours was definitely an experience. Also, once when I was shooting with (the late) Helmut Newton, for one picture I was lying on a bed of nails and in another I was in a bathing suit and eating grass. (No, he didn't really make her eat it).

Is she serious? Is she effing serious? She is so gorgeous I'm pretty sure Toronto men would be lining up around the block for her.

Thank you for the article and the scans. She looks fantastic!!!

Fashion Television story on Daria most of it was done at the Flare photoshoot in New York.

We recently caught up with one of the hottest models today…22 year old, Canadian, Daria Werbowy.

“My thoughts about the fashion industry, I think, um… just like anything else it can be taken out of proportion; it can be taken to seriously at times and not enough at others, but I think that it’s what you want it to be, it’s subjective, it’s art as well. What it means to me and what it means to somebody else can be two different things. I think that the amazing thing about this business is that you can take whatever you want from it”

Daria has appeared on over 60 magazine covers in the last 3 years.
Her major campaigns have included: Prada, Gucci, Chanel, YSL and Lancome.
She is one of the top runway models. In 2003 she appeared in over 55 shows- more than any other model in a single season.

“Oh man! I’m 22, I feel like I’m 45 sometimes! But, um, I’ve learned a lot about people, a lot about business, learned a lot about um, just life and what I want out of life. I’ve met people that have taught me how I don’t want to be. I’ve met people who have inspired me and made me want to be more like them, um, you see the good and evil.”

“I think after a while you can start losing yourself a little bit and you can start kind of, you know, it’s easy to get caught up in money and all these great things and I kind of realized that I had kind of lost the spiritual things that were important to me.”

Daria recently took a break from runway work. New York Fashion Week marked her return.

(this seems to be backstage at Carolina Herrera where she is wearing the furry jacket)
Jeanne Becker (JB): It’s great to see you back in the shows!
Daria Werbowy (DW): Thank you so much!
JB: How do you feel about doing this?
DW: I’m feelin’ good, feelin’ good. It’s um, good break, good to step out of it a little bit and regroup and do a couple of the good old normal Canadian things like snow boarding but, um, it’s nice to be back. It’s a little different and you kind of realize how the heck did I do this before?
(clip of Anna Sui and Luca Luca)
You get really, really tired and I was constantly waking up in places not knowing where I was so I took some art classes, went home, hung out in Mississauga, went to Toronto it was great! And, now I’m back and it’s nice to take yourself out and want to come back. I’ve grown up a little bit more, have better perspective, a better attitude, a little bit more comfortable with myself and you know you’ve all been watching me grow! (then she does her little giggle)
(back at the flare photoshoot)
I’m not going to let you see what’s on my ipod it gives away too much information.

What about the future?
“I would love to sail around the world that’s my biggest goal in life, I’ve been sailing since I was nine. I want to start a foundation, um, I want to take culinary classes, I want to hopefully have a gallery one day, maybe have a clothing line, maybe have a restaurant, I don’t know. That’s, that’s why I’m the luckiest person on the earth
earth cause I can dream of these things and maybe have them come true.”

I thought that she was aboslutely lovely:D
