she certainly ISN'T one right now, but she certainly WILL be considered as one in the future. she has the "Kateness" that makes people obsess over her within the industry. she doesn't seem the type to do the commercial, Victoria's Secret route, so she needs the actor boyfriend or some other sort of mainstream, tabloid-worthy exposure in order to launch her into the next realm of SUPERMODEL.

even if she never garners any sort of mainstream celebrity necessary to be a true "Supermodel", she's left a very significant mark in the industry itself and will be remembered for such.


p.s. Gisele is certainly the SUPERMODEL of today. she just signed a deal with Apple Computers. APPLE!!!! haha. like really -- she can, and is hired to, sell anything. Daria, as much as she is loved in this community, and as great a model as she is, and even as gorgeous as she is -- has a long way to go before a computer giant or cell phone company signs her to a multi-million dollar contract. those are reserved for the Gisele's and Kate's of the world.

I do hope that Daria won't become someone who lives in the Tabloids. I like her way too much for that to happen to her. I would prefer if models could become supermodels without the help of the degrading media.

It doesn't seem right that they just tear down such gorgeous people, and I hope Daria doesn't have to go through that.

Ads are one thing, but rumors are another story.

To add my 2 cents to the Daria supermodel discussion...I think it's quite obvious that IMG is trying to make Daria the next supermodel, with the beauty contract, her upcoming campaigns alongside the likes of Kate and Naomi, and Christy Turlington, appearing at the gala on the arm of Testino with Kate, etc. Whether it will work or not is another question. I'm not sure that the mainstream public would really 'get' Daria's type of beauty like the people in fashion do. However, the powers that be have a lot of sway; people also need to realize that the right kind of promotion is half the battle. I, for example, don't understand the appeal of 3/4 of the supposedly beautiful actresses that are 'hot' today, but the right projects and exposure create a common knowledge that the said person is beautiful, and so if Daria is managed correctly, she could become big.

Another question is whether girls like Natalia Vodianova or Liya Kebede are supers. Obviously they are not well known in the traditional sense like Linda Evangelista or Kate Moss, but they are much better known than the average model; ie my non fashionista friends, or casual users of fashion know who they are, even if they don't particularly care about them. If that's the standard, then Daria will most certainly achieve it, if she's not there already.

And obviously, Daria's own willingness to be thrust into the public eye will also play a part. Oftentimes she seems less than enthused about the idea of being an object of mass attention.

I think what we need to look for is a major US fashion cover sometime this year. If American editors decide she has enough appeal to sell a mainstream magazine, I will believe it possible for Daria to become a super.

always nice to read your posts, callidora, especially when it's night time and i'm still working....
anyway, as usual, you say a lot of meaningfull things and you touch some essential points, like the fact that first of all we should find an agreement on what in this time 'supermodel' means. there're been various huge discussions about that, for sure at the moment maybe only gisele is able to still get (some) high fashion and commercial contracts.

about daria, you're perfectly right when saying that you have doubts the mainstream audience can understand her kind of beauty. personally i think that despite all attemps to make her look like a 'reassuring' beauty she's way too androgyne - not to say even masculine at times when she's behaving naturally.
but most of all, as you notice, she seems not to really want to be a super.

her interviews - fully sincere or not - show a complex personality, a model who doesn't seem to really like her role, who continually says 'i'm so lucky' as she is the first one who needs to be convinced by her own words. videos show she's ironic even when she should be attractive and promote a beauty product. pics at events most of times show a bored girl.
and most of all you never see her in the right places, with the right ppl. to get public recognition.
