From Mississauga to Milan, the world's top model is still just the girl next door
In a matter of months, Daria Werbowy's life has been turned upside down. From local modeling gigs for Toronto designers and retailers, she's been whisked away to Paris, New York, Monte Carlo, London and Milan and has become the fresh new darling of international fashion. Do we hear a "super" being prefixed to her job title?
It was not exactly overnight success for the 20-year-old model, who's put boyfriends, a social life and artist aspirations on hold for her profession. But after multiple less-triumphant attempts at going international in her late teens, a meeting with influential casting director Russell Marsh early last year marked her first big break. By spring, she was walking the catwalks of Prada and Miu Miu, then starring in the Fall 2003 Prada campaign, photographed by star-maker Steven Meisel (credit him for the über in Linda Evangelista, for the high-gloss images of multiple Versace and Dolce & Gabbana campaigns and for Madonna's book Sex).
Werbowy's schedule is suddenly packed with fittings, shoots and shows, and everyone who's anyone is already working with her--photographers David Sims, Mario Testino, Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, and designers from Tom Ford to Marc Jacobs. Her New York power agency, IMG Models--famous for moulding new models into stars--wouldn't have it any other wav.
"Daria is just a very relaxed, cerebral, soulful kind of person who everybody feels very comfortable with," says Ivan Bart, vice-president at IMG. "She is on the path of being a high-fashion model. And, eventually, as she becomes more famous, I could see her as a very big spokesperson, whether it's for cosmetics or being on television. She has the personality for that."
Though Werbowy's often clustered with two other young Canadian models, Heather Marks and Jessica Stam, Bart makes another comparison: "Daria reminds me a lot of Linda [Evangelista]. And you can tell by how often Steven [Meisel]'s been working with her [for Italian and American Vogue and again for the Spring 2004 Prada campaign]. She's a muse. And Linda was Steven's muse. Every successful model has been compared [to someone]--Linda was like a young Joan Severance, Cindy Crawford was a young Gia--but, eventually, these women take on their own persona. When they write the history book on fashion, Daria will be remembered."
Between taking to the runway at half a dozen couture collections and posing for French Vogue, Numéro and Chanel, it has taken two weeks for us to connect on the phone since we first started our conversation at the FLARE shoot in Toronto. Midnight on a Friday night in Paris, an exhausted--but high-spirited--Werbowy chimes in on the secrets of her success.

Be open-minded
"I recently did a cowgirl story for Numéro with Greg Kadel, which was a lot of fun. It's definitely a side of me I never thought I would bring out. It was like a cowgirl, but very sexy with lassos, ripped-off short shorts, cowboy hats, long pigtails and big hair. It becomes like acting and you get to become a different character. Then, for a Vogue story with [the late] Helmut Newton, I had to lie on a bed of nails. They put a board along my spine and you could not tell. It looked pretty fantastic."
Know thyself
"When I first started modeling in Canada, I wore full makeup. I'd do my hair in the morning and [put on] fitted pants, high-heels and turtle-neck sweaters. I fully played the part, but I quickly realized that it wasn't me. Now I don't wear [any makeup]. It's comfort first. I'm a jeans fanatic, paired with sneakers and lingerie tops. I mix it up with some designer items--Chloé, Marc Jacobs, Chanel. I'm lucky that my family, in general, has great skin. I use Dr. Hauschka Quince Day Cream and Fresh Sugar Face Polish--they're fantastic."
Vanity, where is your sting?
"I still don't [think I'm beautiful. When people keep telling you that,] it gets to the point where it's in one ear and out the other; it doesn't mean anything anymore. I was a tomboy for the longest time. I held my skateboard and wore baggy pants and I never really thought I was beautiful as a model at all--still even at times now. Who's to say that I'm more beautiful than another person? It's like art; it's very subjective."
Wisdom of the ages
"You definitely are forced to grow up really fast. I had to learn to pay my own bills, look for an apartment, get from one airport to another, do my taxes--all that [unglamorous] stuff that nobody ever wants to talk about. Plus, you're working with people twice your age. If you want to have a relationship with a client and have a good rapport with someone and be able to hold a conversation, [you have to be mature]."
Blame Canada
"For a bit, there wasn't anything coming out of Canada in terms of fashion, so now it's nice to see a lot. There's Julie Harris who does makeup with Pat [McGrath], there's a couple of photographers who are assisting bigger photographers, there's a lot of girls, [designers] DSquared² has made it quite big now. I think things always happen in groups. A couple years ago, it was the Brazilians. Before that, it was the Belgians. Canadians have such a great reputation around the world. When I came back to Toronto for the holidays. [I knew that] the day I decide to have children and get married, I don't think there's any other place that I would rather raise my children. It has the best of both worlds; you've got your city, but it's also quiet. And I miss Queen Street."
Travel light
"I pack my sketchbook [her media are pencil and black ink while traveling, and paint at home], my iPod [with a mix of alternative rockers Jeff Buckley and Leonard Cohen, a little Justin Timberlake, 'a little Britney--I'm a Slave 4 U, just for those days when you need something upbeat'], this Diptyque candle that smells like a fireplace and I usually have a book. Right now, I'm reading The Da Vinci Code. I used to get a teddy bear in there, but you learn to [pare down]."
Don't let fame get to you
"I've been recognized [on the street] four times. The first time was a 16-year-old boy. I thought, 'I love this kid, he recognized me--here's my email.' That first instinct was really strange. When I'm not working, I snowboard in the winter, teach sailing at the Port Credit Yacht Club in Mississauga in the summer. When I come home and see my friends [and family], we talk about what I do for five minutes and the rest of it is going up to cottages and cafés, to the bar to have a beer and catch up. No one's freaking out and treating me differently."
