Daria Malygina from Russia with love. October 4, 2013

ST PETERSBURG, RUSSIA – I met Daria Malygina in Moscow last year and had the pleasure of interviewing her about her life, being a Model, DJ and all round IT girl of Russia I was intrigued to find out more about her.

-Tell us about yourself and your background, when did you start to DJ?
“I started 4 years ago, with my best girlfriend Alisa Shavrova, she still lives in Saint P, I moved to Moscow 3.5 years ago. So mostly I play in Moscow and I’ve been in Russia, until Vladivostok, which is 9 hours away by flight, haha. Also I played in all country’s close to Russia, Ukraine, Belorussia, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Indonesia, England etc. So my professions is all about travelling around the world.

- What makes St Petersburg special for you?
“It is a city of love to me. All the love affairs are there or with those who are from there. I’ve been living in Moscow for three and half years, so St. Petersburg’s became the city of summer, reminiscences of childhood, where you know all the downtown inside and out, all the entrances to apt blocks to climb to a roof, and then know how to cross from one roof to another and appear on another avenue. It is a city of mens jackets on my shoulders, night walks with a bottle of red wine, rising bridges, kisses on a ship and cheap bars. You always keep in mind that even if you’re broke you can get wasted and get a cab for free. So no wonder I would dedicate my story to the places which are important to me and carefully kept in my memories, ’cause it doesn’t really matter where you are now, it matters who are you with, what song is playing, what scent’s embracing you, the eyes you’re looking in.
As for rain, you are so get used to it that you don’t really take cover. Wet hair and the happiest smiles around you. When it’s raining heavily you find shelter in an archway and get warm arms around someone close to you. And when you walk alone it doesn’t matter if you’re soaking wet.
Perhaps not everyone likes all these things as much as I do but St. Petersburg is made of this in and out. I used to live on Fontanka over previous 7 years in Kapustin’s House which was a most beautiful house in St.Pete before restoration. One of my house mates was in a hard core band, another was playing the grand piano, classics mostly, and I could listen to him playing on and on. Even before that, in the nineties my parents broke into an attic on Nekrasov street, the windows looked out onto the roof. My mom is an artist and a fashion designer so all the walls were splattered with her drawings, pictures all around, piles of fabric. All my life I’ve been sleeping on a mattress without a bed, and even now I think this is comfortable.
St. Peteresburg has always made me bump into talented people, people who are bound up in art, they are living in a mess but they like to be wrapped up in art disregarding the outer world, thinking only of people who inspire them.
Forget your car, your umbrella, take only a sweater with you and go.”

- Where do you like to go shopping?
“That’s probably complicated for me, because Im only there once every half a year and this is a city that is totally not for shopping.”

- What are your favourite restaurants/bars?
“Bars: Terminal Bar on Rubinshtein street, small romantic bar with piano
Mishka bar on Fontanka. Always fun and funk.
Dom Beat on Raz’ezaya street. Its night club with amazing music.
Dumaskaya street is all about ruffian bars, cheap alcohol, fussball.
Restaurants: Teplo. Amazing summer place, you always feel like you are in hope, so comfortable.
Zoom. Super cheap. Amazing food, but always full of people.
Shtolle. Everyone has to try it and I’m sure youre gonna to love it.”

- Tell us about the nightlife in St Petersburg, what places are the best?
“Usually I play at Mishka bar or Dom Beat, so, for me only those places. And more about parties with interesting musicians. For parting you have to go in Moscow, its huge, Saint P is so romantic you should just take bottle of wine and walk, walk, walk.”

- What music albums are you listening to at the moment?
“I’m all about old songs. The list is so loooong. I can talk about music forever.
Marvin Gaye – Sexual Healing, Inner City Blues , Stubborn Kind Of Fellow
Stevie Wonder- All i do, Love light in flight
Maze feat. Frankie Beverly – Joy and Pain ’81
