“Organic geometry” are the words vice president of design Elizabeth Giardina used to describe the vision for pre-fall at Derek Lam 10 Crosby. Giardina culled inspiration from Brazilian artist Lygia Pape’s work — particularly, from the late Fifties and early Sixties, her minimalistic woodblock prints on Japanese rice paper — which she translated into blown-up prints of wood grain in shades of red, black and blue. Geometry also played a role in the collection’s silhouettes: Pockets and shoulders on jackets were intentionally oversize, and rectangular bands revealed cut-outs on dresses and tops, adding an understated sexiness to the lineup.
