Designers face onslaught of competing labels from celebrities (NYT)

I've seen people carry designer bags and wear some designer pieces whom I know are not "rich".. it's a matter of priorities..

Some people like to travel, some like to drive a fancy car, some people like to go out every weekend, and some people like to wear it.

someone making $70K probably can't have a closet full of Louboutins, but if she really wants a pair, she can save up, scimp on something else, and get one to enjoy for the season

But, only those who can afford it and let's be honest it is usually the rich who can afford a 700 dollar pair of shoe

Do you honestly think that someone who makes like 70,000 a year can afford to buy one pair of christian louboutin shoes, marc jacobs bag, or an oscar de la renta dress?
No...well not someone who is fiscally responsible.

$70,000 is not that bad. and while i dont promote fiscal irrisponsibility. yes they can buy such items on that kind of paycheck.
the thing is individuals ought to know how to shop, I own a lot of designer items, and im not fiscally irresponsible

I agree, fiscally responsible ? I think its pretty safe to say, I'm not. If you really think about it, how responsible is it to buy a pair of Louboutins? Different people have different interests. I'm a student and still manage to have a pretty impressive closet. I might not buy as much as someone that is "rich" but I make educated choices and make a few purchases I really love.

As far as designing celebrities, I feel that the fashion industry has really courted these little monsters, replacing models with actors, shooed out the front row of fashion shows for some big name, so eager to dress some flavor of the month for some cheap publicity. So in so many ways I think this "onslaught" is well deserved, the industry brought it on themselves. Though I realize not all design houses are alike, but for godsakes I think I'm next in line to be the face of Versace (joke.) There are some very serious designers who steer clear of celebs, but as an industry they awoke this giant, I mean in the end it is pretty fiscally responsible for some actor/singer/"it" girl to slap their name on something and cash in a check.

Personally,
I don't know why Phillip lim is worried...most of the people who buy his clothing or uber-rich, upscale, upwardly mobile, upper classe, upper middle class people.
Those who buy j.lo, sean john, victoria beckham, sarah jessica parker and other designers are mostly middle class. These are the people who could never afford gucci, chanel, phillip lim, donna karen, oscar de la renta and other designers.

I totally disagree. The lines of fashion that people are interested in is not primarily associated with their income. I'm sure the majority of 'upwardly mobile' people don't have time to flick through GQ and Vogue, they're too concentrated on their careers. They are more likely to wear what their peers wear, Armani suits etc. status symbols.
People wearing Phillip Lim are more likely to be fashion enthusiats whom can have all sorts of incomes, if you're interested in fashion your financial priorities are likely to way heavily on fashion.

I think philip Lim and everyone else is worried, at least he is saying it Publicly,
the reality is, Talent doesnt always wins out.......... look at Cloak, look at theyskens and a ton of others that i could mention.
Also the idea that no talent is behind Celebrity lines is somewhat absurd.
the Celebrities are not doing anything different from what top designers like Ralph Lauren and Giorgio Armani does.......... They hire design talent Graduating from college (or fromother companies) to work on thier lines, so that IS talent.
i personally was courted by a Celebrity line for a senior design position, would you say that that isnt talent?
the advantage the Celebrity lines have is that they are catering to an area of the market that generates far more money than Designer Brands ........Contemporary and Mass market Fashion.
the unspoken but open secret in fashion is that 85-90 0f designer brand do not make money from the clothing in thier signature collections..........
they make it from perfume, accessories, eyewear, small leather goods, shoes etc.
mass market is about selling large volumes of clothing that is profitable.
the money that designers would make from secondary lines, is being eaten away by a lot of these celebrity lines............and there in lies the great problem

Popular culture’s heightened focus on fashion encourages designers to raise their personal profiles. “Post Tom Ford, fashion has become a very different place,” said Thakoon Panichgul, who was also nominated for the honor Mr. Lim won. “There was so much globalization of fashion before when Tom Ford was the ‘it boy’ and because of that, people expect more of a designer. You have to do more than one job. You have to be out and about and be very sociable.”
it's all tom ford's fault...
i think that is why so many people hate him so much...

:innocent:...

...

It is the democratization of fashion and for that matter culture. What can you expect when you have project runway! I never thought creativity was a race...but it seemingly is now. Based on ££$$€€, celebrity and heavy endorsement. Did I already mention money? Definitely not talent....
Of course, these celebutard collections do give gainful employment to fashion graduates, although to be blunt, I certainly wouldn't care for it on my CV...

hey,i dunno if you guys are being sarcastic about tom,but he did actually play a huge role in the hollywood movement.....

I have a quick question.
Why would this whole celeb designer start after the Tom Ford?
