Diane Von Furstenberg F/W 06.07 NYC

the collection is up at style.com:

NEW YORK, febrero 5, 2006 – Despite a soundtrack that included Dolly Parton singing "9 to 5" and Irene Cara belting out "What a Feeling," Diane von Furstenberg's fall show wasn't as much about the eighties as it was about strong female archetypes. Dubbed Working Girl, the collection alternated between sharp, little forties suits in houndstooth knits—think sexy secretary—and bold patchwork serapes à la pioneering frontier woman.

There were also plenty of wrap dresses, the item that set von Furstenberg on her own fiercely independent path three decades ago. These were joined by shirtdresses in everything from a Navajo-striped chiffon to a leopard print to polka dots (the best came in a navy wool jersey). Pants, that modern woman's must-have basic, were paradoxically lacking. The few times they did show up, with a vest and a bow-front blouse, they were full in the leg and cuffed. Mink-trimmed booties weren't likely to introduce a note of practicality, but there's no denying they're sexy, as DVF's program notes urged us to be, "every day, all day…"

After last season's accident at her studio, in which a rack of stage lights fell on the audience, von Furstenberg moved her act to the Bryant Park tents. Judging by the leisurely stroll she took around the U-shaped runway, she felt at home in her new surroundings. As she greeted celebrity friends like Susan Sarandon, Charlie Rose, Diane Sawyer, and Mike Nichols (who as it happens directed the show's namesake movie), it was apparent that this is one working girl who loves her job.

I dont know about anyone else, but I really wasnt all that fond of this DVF show. It just seemed bland, and muddled down by the colors. The prints were ok, and her signature, but everything else wasnt that great. Especially that color block dress-- it just didnt hit me.

There were some things that were great, like her last dress, and both Liya, and the dress she modeled were fantastic, but the rest of the collection just didnt hit me. It felt to all over the place.

Though I have to give her credit for the new proportion of a dress with a huge collared coat. Karl Lagerfeld started that two seasons ago for Fendi, and she kind of did a more wearable version of it.

Even if the collection was dull, at least she tried to push her collection into a new arena proportion wise.

I looked at those pics and the whole collection on style.com. I agree that some of the styling was weird, but i disagree about the block color dress. I really like that one. Her prints are amazing! Diane doesnt really take too many risks as a designer, but she is really good at what she does and her show got a really glowing review in the Times by Cathy Horyn. She writes that, "on Sunday in the tents at Bryant Park the idea provided Ms. von Furstenberg with her most believable theme in years, as she and her chief assistant, Nathan Jenden, who will present his own show this week, tucked into the elements of a modern wardrobe.
If the cut of jackets in blown-up houndstooth had not been so sharp, if tartan pencil skirts had been less flattering, all that pattern would have suggested an anxiety attack. Ms. von Furstenberg made black watch plaid — out of fashion except among Connecticut Yankees — seem whimsical, and more natural to an American designer than in seasons when she reduced the world's supply of sequins."

the uber blow up prints make this messy and uncommercial to bits but the rst is pretty ok for DVF.. after all its a mass market line we couldnt expect too much from them..

the trousers/waistcoat look is very 'hot' (see Hermes ss06), i also like the green blue combination but i cant see how could someone wear dots during winter.. maybe as a fall trend but in winter ot seems a bit out of place..

thanks for the repost larien :flower:

^ I don't understand what all the short sleeves on fall runways are for ... but I've been seeing a fair number of dots. There was a lot of dotted hosiery on MJ's runway, for example ... I do like this dress ...

Hey I have posted some pics of garments that i have designed on the Julian Roberts Nothing Nothing thread. As u r lovers of fashion i wud really be grateful 4 ur reaction to them. The pics are on the bottom of page 10 of the thread.
Thanx

I just looked at DvF's spring 2006 collection on style.com, and I really  it. I saw the wraps I expected plus some new surprises. She really knows how to flatter the female figure. Always a favorite of mine.

The dress looks weird on Diane, too ...

I think there are some decent things in this collection ... but two of my major gripes about the season in general apply to the few good pieces ... too floaty and sheer for fall, and too grey already ... I've been doing grey for the past two seasons and I want something new ...
