Donatella Versace - Designer, Creative Director of Versace

Some facts for those who dont know much:

Gianee Versace December 2, 1946 - July 15, 1997 [font=Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif]

Versace was born to a family who owned a tailoring store in Reggio Calabria. As a young boy, he learned to design and make his own clothes. Several of his designs were sold at the family store. Versace's first career success came in 1972, when he was contracted by a company to create a collection. In 1974, his name was seen on his own designs for the first time when he signed with the Complices trademark. In 1978, he opened his first boutique. In 1985, his Instante collection hit the store stands.

Versace was murdered on July 15, 1997, outside his Miami Beach, Florida mansion; Andrew Cunanan, a former lover, became a prime suspect. Cunanan, who was suspected of murdering four others in a killing spree, fled from the police. Ten days later he committed suicide in a houseboat on Miami Beach that was under siege by armed police.

After the death of Gianni Versace, his sister, Donatella Versace, took over his business the family's trademark of using bright colors and designs. Before murder of her brother Gianni, Donatella and Santo Versace maintained secondary jobs in his fashion house. However, after the death of Gianni, Donatella took over the running her brother's business. Currently overseeing the fashion house, she has performed well as the Versace name continues grow.

Everywoman in Versace sights

Lisa Armstrong in Milan
Feb. 21. — I had been told that Donatella Versace would be on time because tardiness is no longer part of her lifestyle. In fact she was early, dressed head to toe in discreet black (a cashmere turtleneck and trousers, with a light dusting of make-up, as opposed to the more flamboyant sequins and eyelashes of old).
Along with the Russian supermodel Eugenia Volodina, she was waiting for the arrival of the first pieces of her winter 2005 collection, which will be shown on the Milan catwalk on Thursday and is previewed exclusively.
Explaining why she is determined to take the company in a new direction, she said: “I’m not blind. I know that most women don’t look like models. We had to start addressing other parts of a woman’s life.” This includes the daytime, a time-frame sometimes ignored by the label, but not any more: about 90 per cent of catwalk show on Thursday will be daytime looks.
After a bumpy period, the house, which has clothed almost every big contemporary star from Diana, Princess of Wales, and Elton John to Catherine Zeta-Jones, is in turnaround mode, and not before time. The world has moved on from the brash flashiness that became synonymous with its name. From now on, the focus is on discreet, almost understated clothes for men, a new, more subdued Medusa logo and a rigorously tailored, structured silhouette for women: curvy jackets in cashmere wool with minuscule, cinched-in waists, and huge lapels worn — this is still Versace, after all — with snakeskin-print mini-skirts and 12 cm heels. In real life, the heels will be reduced to 10 cm and the skirts will be slightly longer, she said, sounding almost wistful. — The Times

I really hope this is all true. But this makes me skeptical of the whole article...

"with a light dusting of make-up"

You are so welcome. :D

So basically a watered down Versace consisting of v-neck sweaters and casual separates? No thanks. Versace made it through the late 80's/early 90's which had a similar social/political/economic climate as we do now. But it never faltered and never scaled back. Sounds like Versace is suffering from Donatella's severe lack of inspiration and skill, not from the drastic times we live in.

very well put, totally agree with you... I LOVE versace under donatella... losing the glitz, the rock attitude and, to a certain extent, the garishness in their desings would just be losing the true essence of the house of versace

Well what I was trying to say is that Versace under Donatella has devolved into the sad state it is in now. It shined under Gianni and my point is that Donatella's lack of business sense and design skill is what killed Versace, not the war in Iraq or 9/11 or the tanking economy.

This sounds promising, I hope it'll finally be more daywear as Lisa says in that article. I'm quite looking forward to it now B)

This is interesting. I want Versace to "calm" down but I don't want it to lose its flair. Hopefully she found the median.

I hope that they don't stop making th beautifull gowns...Even though it's not my style, I think it's fabulous to watch Julia, Hana, Daria in those dresses

im excited... i hope she still keeps that sexy versace attitude with her day-time clothes though...

Thursday will be the last time I give a chance to Donatella, if she blows it up I declare the house to be doomed untill a new designer comes in. She already did so many things so bad, the Madonna campaign was her latest far too costly mistake...

Maybe we should wait for the show to pass quick judgement...

...I'm always excited for Versace, but even more so now!
