Dries Van Noten - Designer

I’m sad for myself but happy for him. Once more he’s doing things his own way and with an amount of integrity that is rather unusual these days. Yes, selling to Puig was already a sign that he wanted to step down leaving the company in safe hands, I actually thought it would take him a shorter time to do so. Also, fashion is less and less the kind of industry where his kind of taste can be appreciated and flourish, in a way his brand has always been and, hopefully, will always be “niche”. I just hope the Puig people agree.

This really hits home for me. He's one of my all time favorites, one of the reasons why I feel in love with fashion. His voice, his sensibility, his passion... there is no one like Dries, he's irreplaceable.

I just hope he's indeed leaving at his own terms, and not cause he's being pushed out by the Puig suits.

Apparently, he will have the role of a Chief Creative Officer at the house so he's not letting go completely. I hope that also means he'll be involved in the process of looking for his replacement because we don't need another LdSS for Ann Demeulemeester kind of disaster.
I read that but I was thinking more of if his retirement under those conditions will be like Tom Ford or Thierry Mugler.
Tom was/is an adviser in the company, right? Or at least until the end of 2023 as it was mentioned before. That kind of position is more about strategic than creative decisions.

Thierry Mugler however retired from fashion but was still involved with the fragrances business.

I guess Dries will choose his successor but I wonder if he will be still involved in the development of the beauty side of his business and the strategy too.
While Puig must be proud to have a functioning fashion business, fragrances is the heart of their group.

I don’t know why but I feel like he will choose someone from his team.

Finally a limit on how many Shearling scarves and Ombre Coats can you make.

Honestly good for him to determine his end time as the creative director and stepping back when it felt like the right thing to do so. As others have said, a shame we won’t get one more women’s wear collection from him, but at the same time they’ve flip flopped so much the last couple of years so it’d be a big bummer if he finished on a rather dud note. F/W 2024 was pretty gorgeous, besides the confusing styling…

I do hope they don’t rush a successor. I think it would be important for the team to do a couple of seasons on their own to help assist a Dries-less creative environment and to help foster their intuition. That way, whoever comes in will be working with a rather autonomous and confident team. Yes, he’ll still have a say in some things considering he isn’t fully stepping back but he also would probably like this side of it all to be fairly independent.

Devastating news for me as a Dries customer. It has been on my mind that this day would come inevitably, but I didn’t anticipate it to be now. I buy Dries menswear every season and my wardrobe has been mostly comprised of his clothes for the last few years. They’re well made, well priced and a joy to wear. Always beautiful footwear. No one does colours and prints like him. My wardrobe will now have a void. I will continue to buy until his last season and will likely buy more from past seasons second hand.

I stopped buying and wearing Ann when she left. It wasn’t the same anymore. I know DVN won’t be either. I hope he finds a successor within his team to carry on his vision without diverting too far.

It was only a matter of time and took longer than I expected, but still very sad news. Even though his collections have been hit or misses in recent years, when they hit they were BRILLIANT! I once gave a standing ovation from home watching his show’s livestream. Ridiculous behavior but I was that moved!

Like many others have said, I wish his last collection was women’s, not only because that is his better work but it would be a larger send off with a bigger audience.

I want to be positive about his replacement and I hope he has some say, but I can’t think of a great appointment at any brand in the past 10 years so I do not expect this to be any different….

As someone that spends an unhealthy amount of time dreaming of retiring, I am happy that he can step down on his terms (so it seems) and enjoy the rest of his life.

I am truly happy for him but I am also DEVASTATED to hear this!!! I hope Puig won’t be like Kering and will actually choose a decent successor and have Dries to also be part of the decision-making

I don’t even know what to say right now although someone told me this after his last show. I feel really sad but at the same time quite happy for him because he deserves a rest and living a great life.

selfishly, my first reaction was a gasp and an internal 'NOOO don't go!' but - he's 65, I get it he wants to live his life and have more free time for himself, it's only natural, and I hope he enjoys his time out of the creative director chair and left on his own terms.

will always respect a designer who knows to put an end. He did amazingly for a long time and deserves now to rest.

I have been more impacted by his menswear than his womenswear but his talent overall is undeniable.

Now Patrick van ommeslaeghe is not sexy name but he is very talented and available!

Oh!!! Patrick! That would be interesting!
Now, you got me excited!
He is good with colors too!

What about Sander Lak? He worked for Dries Van Noten already, he could be quite good, too. But I feel like they will promote someone internally.

A happy end for him i guess :lucky:. Not like....hmm my all time beloved Christian Lacroix and Helmut Lang the man 😭

this is expected but still make me sad a bit.

But good for him knowing when to put an end and move on. I definitely see DVN becoming bigger and a younger talent who can also get along with marketing and business growth is needed after the foundation Dries had made. I love their lipstick collection and the perfume bottles. Would love to see more it accessories too.

@Lola701 now you have me curious about your husband’s personal style. 😆

I made a breakdown of Van Noten's departure from his company:
• Van Noten's last collection will be Men's SS'25 with the adjacent womenswear collection being designed by the design team
• with the launch of beauty and fragrances along with a strengthened accessories line, the Dries Van Noten brand has become Puig's fastest growing brand
• they're already looking for a successor with candidates based in Europe, but the final timeline is currently unknown
• Van Noten will continue his involvement in the company in other projects
EXCLUSIVE: Dries Van Noten Is Stepping Down
The acclaimed Belgian designer's last show in his current role will be in June for the men's spring 2025 season.

Marking the end of an era for a beloved and singular designer, a search for a successor to Dries Van Noten quietly commenced in recent months, according to market sources.

Contacted by WWD, the acclaimed Belgian designer confirmed he is stepping down in June, after nearly four decades in fashion — and a glorious, slow-building fashion career.

His last show in his current role will be his men’s show for the spring 2025 season, scheduled for Paris Fashion Week.

“In due time, we will announce the designer who will continue the story,” Van Noten said in a statement shared exclusively with WWD. “I have been preparing for this moment for a while, and I feel it’s time to leave room for a new generation of talents to bring their vision to the brand.”

Synonymous with ravishing colors, striking prints and dignified dressing tinged with exotic details, Van Noten forged a succession roadmap when he sold a majority stake in his Antwerp-based house to Puig in 2018.

At the time of the transaction, Puig said Van Noten would remain “over the long-term a significant minority shareholder” and would “continue as chief creative officer and chairman of the board.”

While particulars were not disclosed at the time, the designer had committed to stay for a minimum of five years, sources told WWD.

It is understood the initial list of potential successors to Van Noten includes promising number-two designers, which have been implicated in many recent designer appointments, including at Tod’s, Bally, Alexander McQueen and Moschino.

Conversations with designers in Europe have already taken place, sources said. However, the timeline and other particulars about the search could not immediately be learned.

The next Dries Van Noten women’s collection “will be made by my studio team with whom I have been working very closely during all these years. I have full confidence that they will do a great job,” Van Noten said in the statement. “In due time, we will announce the designer who will continue the story.

“However, I will stay involved in the house that I treasure so much,” he added.

“We respect Dries’ wish to step aside, after an exceptional 38-year career in fashion,” Marc Puig, chairman and chief executive officer of Puig, said in a separate statement shared with WWD. “It is a distinct honor for Puig to now be entrusted with carrying his legacy into the future, and a unique responsibility we will treasure as a new and exciting chapter opens for both Dries and the brand.

“The relationship we have with founders, even after their retirement, has long been a defining factor for Puig’s success, and we look forward to continuing our personal and professional friendship as Dries remains involved in the brand to work on certain projects,” he added.

A beloved figure on the fashion and retail scene, Van Noten has won numerous awards, including the WWD Honor for Designer of the Year in 2023, and the CFDA’s International Designer of the Year in 2008. He has also been decorated by Fashion Group International, the Couture Council of the Museum at FIT and the Flemish Royal Academy of Belgium.

A 2014 exhibition at Les Arts Décoratifs in Paris probed how pop culture, fine objects and paintings shaped Van Noten’s aesthetic, also detailing his career-long collaboration with embroiderers in India.

The designer is 65 years old, and has many outside interests beyond fashion, including a passion for gardening.

“As a young guy from Antwerp, my dream was to have a voice in fashion. Through a journey that brought me to London, Paris and beyond, and with the help of countless supportive people, that dream came true,” he told WWD. “Now I want to shift my focus to all the things I never had the time for. I’m sad, but at the same time happy.”

While Van Noten is involved in many aspects of the business beyond design, Puig has in recent years fortified management ranks at the company, tapping Axel Keller, who had been CEO of Jil Sander, as president.

Keller had a long career as commercial director for top designer brands in France, most notably Balenciaga, where he was commercial director for 14 years, and at Maison Margiela, where he held that role for 13 years.

One of the original Antwerp Six, and arguably the one who has had the most enduring impact on womenswear and menswear, Van Noten comes from a family of tailors and is a graduate of Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts. He launched his label with menswear in 1986, and established his flagship store, known as Het Modepaleis and located on the site of a historic department store, in his hometown in 1989.

Like many Belgian designers, Van Noten has resisted most of the common paths to growth, forgoing pre-collections, advertising, celebrity dressing and a handbag push.

But since linking up with Puig, he has opened more freestanding boutiques, launched a range of fragrances and lipsticks, and combined his fashion and beauty worlds in a newfangled boutique concept in Paris mingling accessories and beauty products.

In disclosing 2023 financial results, Puig flagged that Van Noten ranks as its fastest-growing niche brand.

The Spanish group’s fashion portfolio also includes Carolina Herrera, Jean Paul Gaultier, Nina Ricci and Rabanne.

Gaultier retired from the runway in 2020, and continues to select guest couturiers for his Paris-based house. Carolina Herrera brought in designer Wes Gordon as her wingman for a short period and then fully handed over the design reins in 2018.

“Since Puig became part of our business, we could continue to grow the way we wanted to,” Van Noten said, citing the addition of beauty and perfume lines, the expansion of the accessories, the addition of e-commerce and new and innovative stores.

“The brand is now blooming. Like in a garden, you decide what to plant, and at some point, it continues to flourish,” he said. “Seeing our clothes out in the world, knowing they have a place in your life, has fulfilled me beyond words.

“I am sure of this: the DVN future remains bright,” he concluded.

Random thought....So if he's got all this free time on his hands, AND, he's w/ Puig...do I see him as guest-designer for JPGs HC show? Unlikely, but let me feel that fantasy for a mo-ment.

I hope that he'll think really diligently about who should take over after him. He's was one of the first high-fashion designers I bought, and the only one I kept up with through the years. I'd hate to see his label turn to another Ann. Of course, nobody's going to duplicate his success & style completely, but it'd be unfortunate to see whomever's designer for him have no clue what they're doing.

Heartbreaking news (some of the outlets put his pic in black and white so had heat attack bc I thought he died LOL) but in happy for him and I hope he gets to spend more time in his garden which he loves so much.

Who could be potential successor ? I honestly don’t think it will be any big name, more like a DVN design director or something along these lines…
