I must be the only one who thinks this makes sense. Obviously his sexual preference was never mentioned during the books explicitly -he's seen mostly through Harry's eyes as a mentor, plus he's an old man, his sexuality isn't an issue by then -but the young relationship with Grindlewald seemed to me like a teenage infatuation. I've always thought of Dumbledore as someone who loved and lost and, sexuality-wise, I think he's never showed any signs of heterosexuality. Point is -I don't understand how dumbledore being gay will hugely change anyone's reaction to the books -he's written quite consistently as a character who could possibly be gay. Having it confirmed makes a difference, but doesn't undermine what came before it.

As to the people who are appalled that a gay man is portrayed as a mentor to lots of school children (not necessarily directed at someone here, but it's something which I've been hearing a lot of) -can you hear yourselves? Are you seriously suggesting that there is something wrong with the idea of a gay man being a good teacher/mentor? Why on earth should that make a difference?

Where I live, I'm probably surrounded on all sides by parents who would object to such. Obviously, they won't expose their children to the idea of homosexuality because they're afraid it will give them ideas, and convinced they can 'prevent' it in their children if they shelter them well enough. I secretly hope their children happen to be gay; not only that, but the kind to play Marilyn Manson while lighting incense with names like Dragon's Breath, because that sounds like a better alternative than growing up to set their parents' repressed, repressive examples.

As a writer, I'll give my view on this. Information about a character is like an iceberg. You know how the iceberg only has a small piece showing above the water and a gigantic piece below the water?

Well, what the reader knows about the character is the small bit above the water, what the writer knows about the character is the gigantic bit below the water.

So basically, there is heaps and heaps of information about a character that the writer knows but never puts in the books unless it is deemed necessary. You can't put as much backstory in books as you used to be able to. These days audiences want you to get right to the point.

So J.K. Rowling probably did always think of Dumbledore as gay, but she probably didn't really see any need for it to be in the book. But when asked a question about him ever finding love, she drew on the background information of Dumbledore that she had in her mind, but had simply never put in the books.

Has anyone else seen that video of the religious right-winger who said that Dumbledore being gay "Will Cause Sexually Confused Young Boys To Get STDs"? Seriously. That is one ridiculous statement.

As if they can't get STDs from someone of the same gender.
