H Potter costume designer magically creates dress very much like a McQueen

Fine, you're not profitting from it directly, so I won't sue, but it would piss me off to have someone pass off *my* creation as their own. Just give me some friggin' acknowledgment. It's not a costume for a Halloween party, it's her damn job that she's gonna put on her resume & certainly people may hire her based on her Harry Potter work. If the The Weird Sisters covered a U2 song in the film (for example) & the film's composer tried to pass it off as an original creation, I'm pretty sure the "It was just for a movie, chillax!" argument wouldn't seem so reasonable.

^agree 100%.

and also, if it is a customized mcqueen, why is credit not being given? did they think people would not notice? argh.

Does anyone know that the costume designer isn't given credit to McQueen? The interview isn't exactly in-depth. I'm sure if asked she would agree that the McQueen dress provided the overall template....

Oh mah Gaah! OF COURSE THERES PROFIT FROM IT. She got hired for a Potter movie .. and the Potter movie is gonna make like a gazillion dollars ... of course, its not that all about the dress, and I might not have read the books but something I do know is that weddings are key parts of plots on movies (and books) and rely on that event heavily (hence, the box office)

So I dont buy the "she's not gonna profit from it" call it as you want it, but she stole the design and there's no way around it ..

NOW on another note .. Ive read in a couple of place its a supposed McQueen ... we havent heard from the house so maybe that's accurate?

I am not sure where to stand on this. The dress for the movie is shockingly similar, but I haven't seen any details on whether this was quietly done with the approval of someone at McQueen's who might have happily agreed to influencing the dress for some good exposure and perhaps a fat paycheck, considering how a lot of labels and houses are having some tough economic times. And honestly, our very discussion of this matter for all we know could be exactly what they're hoping for.

When talking about designing for the wedding, Jenny Packham spoke about getting x many yards of lace and handling it very carefully, etc. It don't think it's supposed to be McQueen.

I'm surprised neither the house nor Gucci Group have said anything yet.

She was hired to design the costumes for the movie, she was not hired to design just this dress. So i do not see in what way she's making profit from it. She's not a fashion designer she is a costume designer. She earns her wage regardless of money the movie makes.
And really i do not see the problem, i think it's a nice homage actually.
Plus, how is that different from costume designers when hired for a movie of a certain era, getting real pictures or even paintings and copying, sometimes even without a single alteration the designs of the clothes of that period, is someone accusing them of lack of originality? You may earn an Oscar for it. All movies about the start of the last century have faithful copies of Fortuny dresses, so why isn't anyone complaining? . In what way is that different? Didn't those dresses existed before and were designed by someone? What about all the movies about the 50's that have costumes that look like Dior or Balenciaga. Do costume designers have to distance themselves from the actual fashion?

I just think they should have used the real Mcqueen and really do not bother more about it.
