Edith Bouvier Beale

They've already begun filming with Drew Barrymoore, I think.
Were they really that rich? Jackie O had to pay their mortgage at one point so their house didn't get reposessed (or something like that, it's in a Jackie O biography I have from the 70's or 80's)
OK so it is still in production. Any news on a release date? Or more info? Is it a Jackie O movie or is it Edie's life? *crosses fingers* (even though I dont like Drew as an actress)

i loved the clothes in grey gardens...reminds me of the granny chic editorial from vogue U.S, september 2004

Is anyone able to help me with some good quality images of her style or inspirations of this? I'm after chloe, marc jacobs with the cardigan skirt, that 2007 harpers bazaar shoot? any help would be lovely!

^ you might not be wondering anymore, but there's a blog devoted to grey gardens-related news. they have posts on editorials inspired by edie.

and to answer other folks' questions...apparently, the drew barrymore movie is coming out in november, and there is a book on pre-order at amazon.

i've just spent the last few hours going from one thread/site to another. :shock: it started with the athina onassis thread here, and it ended up with reading about the beale women, whom i'd never heard of before tonight.

I can't wait to see the film! The documentary is one of my all-time favorites.

So...November has passed. Did this movie with Drew go straight to a DVD very silently? I'd really like to see it. :unsure:

It must have been very traumatic for her to suffer from alopecia, especially as a young woman in those times. I had the chance to watch the HBO movie, and some of the most heart breaking and though-evoking scenes were Drew realizing the hair loss. I think it could have been her most profound and successful scenes as an actress in her career so far.

Edie made the headscarves/turbans fashionable and extremely stylish without looking costume-y for many. And she has been a huge inspiration for the whole NY art and fashion scene even to this day, including people we admire like Marc Jacobs.

These are great pics, many of which I had never seen before even though I was mildly obsessed with her a while back and looked for everything available.

As for her signature scarves and headwraps, that's an excellent example of making your clothing suit your body. But I think there was actually some question whether she had alopecia or whether she shaved her head. I guess the HBO film took a definite stance?

There's so much of her life that is a mystery. I think that's why I find her fascinating.

HBO worked with her relatives, and her niece said it was true that she did have alopecia, and i agree with you about her being mysterious.I think both she and her mother had an interesting story, and some might call them insane, but they really seemed happy being with each other, even in that state.

Here she is with Jackie as a little girl;
