Emma Watson

Agree with the comments regarding her speech. Her speech was eloquent and she came across as someone who is passionate about the issue and fully aware of the challenges.

Lorraine Candy was at her speech:

Privileged to spend ydy at UN HQ talking feminism for December ELLE @elleuk and proud to hear @emwatson speak so passionately for the HeforShe campaign #heforshe. A career highlight for me. Plus was quite pleased to get passed UN security!

Apparently, Emma and Lorraine were also spotted in Central Park together. Could be a feature in the December issue of ELLE UK.

^ I hope it's for the cover as it is a cover worthy cause. You get so many people on magazine covers promoting a pointless album or movie that will be forgotten in a week, it would be nice to see Elle highlight something important.

^Completely agree with you. Would love it if it's for a cover, would be worth it since feminism and this UN campaign are worthy causes. Would be so cool if Elle did a whole issue on feminism and actually tackled and talked about all different aspects of it. But who knows, this might just be a bit of wishful thinking.

She is such a perfect role model!
what an inspiration:blush:

I like both her looks, specially the Dior

^I would be seriously shocked if that happened... It could be such a great issue, though.

When Keira Knightley visited impoverished area in Africa, the journalist asked her for beauty tips, if I don't remember wrong:rolleyes:

The British media really do treat Keira poorly, it's such a shame they couldn't even pretend to be interested as to why she visited Sudan.

I think it would be such a strong statement if they did have Emma on the cover of Elle purely because she's spearheading an unashamedly feminist, gender positive movement. I would also love it if that UN talk actually made them be a bit more sensitive to gender politics in the long run but maybe that's asking too much.

I have always liked her because she's a wonderful actress, she is absolutely gorgeous and I love it that she went to school (even though she is rich enough so it's not like she needs it to make a living). And now with this, I've gone from liking her to loving her

^Can't really "make a living" of history of art, though, can you? I am pretty sure the amount of work opportunities available and the number of art history students do not match up. In my country it is a rich girls study... But it is great that she wants to expand her mind.

Regardless of what she studied - she didn't have to go to university, she went because she wanted to go, because she wanted to learn.

Her UN speech is a clear and amazing example of why I am a HUGE fan of Emma's and will remain so FOREVER. I can't cheer for her enough! As long as she keeps acting and doing things like being a UN Women Global Ambassador, I will have a little hope that every once in a while someone who truly deserves it is blessed with fame.

I also like her last two looks, the Dior coatdress especially--so beautiful.

Carla Billvall about Emma Watson UN (Cissexism) Equality speech!

Emma Watson in all her glory, but I will speak out on saying what she did wrong! Her speech was the exclusion of transpeople in total. We transpeople do exist in existence! Now she is praised all the time :O Sure, it is important with equality between women and men * cheer cheer *, trans then? We are actually in need of equality also!! Emma cissexism-speech made me happy, happy for equality between women and men must take off globally. I do not understand why transgender people should not be allowed to take part of the equality cake? Equality should be between all the genders POINT!

^Yeah! And she didn't mention the issue of homosexuality, or racism! Or poverty! or consumerism! and not one word about the enviroment! Outrage!

^ It is a fair criticism that the former post raised however it does seem to be overtly critical and dismissive of everything in her speech. Transgender people are ignored in most discourse about gender politics and it is an important issue especially when trying to get gender equality as they are a gender too. Therefore, it is important to address the place that trans people occupy in what I believe to be such an important and worthwhile initiative.

That being said, I really don't think it is something that people should use to criticise Emma. The initiative she's launching is already opening people's eyes and I'm sure as she develops in her role as UN ambassador, so will her perspective and knowledge on how gender is more than just a male/female issue.

I agree with Carla Billvall/RoseFreckles 100 %. Beautiful and wise written. There aren't just two genders men and women, there are transpeople too. What she said about equality between men and women was great but she should have included transpeople too. She had a great oppurtunity to do that but she didn't take it.

Emma mentions that genders should be considered a spectrum; this would include transgenders. Whether transgender should be considered a third gender would be a formality, really, if all men and women were considered equal. I frankly don't think that Carla Billvall has reflected over what Emma said, but had an instant negative reaction when Emma did not mention transgenders specifically, from the start.

I think that the treatment of transgenders can be appaling, don't get me wrong, but they are just one of the many issues that are related to the equality issue.

I agree with everything you say. The post from Carla was hating for hatings sake in my opinion.

She will be a pioneer for gender politics for a while and hopefully in her next speech she will talk more about the position of transgender people in the movement more explicitly rather than perhaps alluding to it. She's a smart woman so I don't doubt it.

She must have really hurt the feelings of a ton of poor poor pooooooor ( ) men on that reddit 4chan site, apparently she's getting r*pe and death threats on the forums. Various other threats as well. Their actions pretty much make her point.
I thought her speech was amazing
