Emma Watson

She is absolutely amazing. Her speech really empowered me. I have been a feminist since I can remember (although I didn't learn the word until junior year of college). Listening to her speech was like hearing my own heart. I know that sounds cheesy, but I believe wholeheartedly in what she said. It's a relief to hear it spoken out loud.

I knew I loved her for a reason. The suit she wore is perfect.

^Completely agree with you. Would love it if it's for a cover, would be worth it since feminism and this UN campaign are worthy causes. Would be so cool if Elle did a whole issue on feminism and actually tackled and talked about all different aspects of it. But who knows, this might just be a bit of wishful thinking.

I tweeted Lorraine and the bolded part is her reply:

“@immortalbliss: @LorraineELLE It would be great if the whole issue was around feminism. Cover/interviews etc.” Wish granted!

That's really exciting. I really hope they don't just tackle the Lena Dunham and Taylor Swift type of feminism and the actually represent all types of feminism.

^I agree. And thats what I am worried they will do. I really do hope they exceed my expectations of them.

Yes I hope they go beyond the bounds of Emma's speech. It was lovely and a great starting point for everyone listening that wasn't already a feminist, but I really would like her to deepen her own (and everyone else's) understanding of feminism beyond ... yeah pretty much just privileged white girl feminism (which I definitely used to be guilty of, coming into feminism).

I hope they include men, because that's what this #heforshe campaign is about. All men should be feminists as well. Its not an issue that just includes women.

This is getting off topic but I think they should represent the women that are championing the cause, not give a pat on the back to men when they are already seen as "good guys" for considering themselves feminists, unlike female feminists who have to deal with negative connotations (to put it lightly). That's like having a white person be the face of anti-racism (as in taking some credit for it), as opposed to someone like MLK. Whilst I think feminism should be inclusive we have to remember that it's women who have championed it in the past and present, not men. The best thing I think a male feminist can do is to support his female peers.

Anyway I can't wait to see how Emma continues furthering feminism in the mainstream media and I hope she deepens her own knowledge and understanding of it.

An article that focuses on "feminisms" bad reputation would be great. And I don't think anyone wants an interview with a smug-looking male "feminist" about why he supports women:lol:

That said, I would like an article that focuses on the male inequality issues as well, like not being able to express their feelings, like Emma mentioned.

I know it falls under the definition of "priveliged white girl issues", but I would love an article that focuses on fashions role in regards to feminism. I am repeating a lot of what I said in the "Fashion and feminism" thread, but I find it slightly insulting, that it is "cool" for women to wear menswear, and "ridiculous" for men to wear womenswear. I would also love an article on why women have to wear makeup in the business-world, while men don't:innocent:

If it ends up being 10 superficial interviews with 10 celebrities who considers themselves "feminists", I am going to be so dissapointed. Fingers crossed that won't happen.

Oh my gosh.... that's so awesome! :buzz: Like others have said, I really hope the issue is a well rounded one and goes in-depth as to aspects of feminism. If they nail the content, it would be amazing. I mean, think about how many people read Elle??? Anyways, can't wait to see what the issue is like.

good for emma. well spoken. excellent that it's led to an issue in elle focussing on feminism.

however, i agree with sobriquet87. i would hope all human beings - male or female, of all colours - are included. why should causes be exclusive? why is "this type" of feminism okay and "that type" not? it seems too fractious to me.

change happened in the 60s and 70s because people came together, united behind a cause. these days there is too much jargon and division imo. i see it in the environmental movement too.

in malcolm x's biography he wrote about how white students would approach him telling him they wanted to support his cause; he told them they couldn't, because the races were separate. a white person couldn't support a black person's cause. later on in his life, after further contemplation and spiritual transformation in mecca, he said he believed people of all colours could come together. sadly, he didn't live to advocate for his new beliefs because the older separatist way led to his death.

^I agree that all "types" of feminism is important, but I think if you want to engage the readers of Elle, you can't just write about women in Africa who aren't allowed to go to school or do certain things etc. It is a bit cynical, but it is true that people care more about the issues that are close to them. Most people who read Elle are bound to be privileged white girls.

Going with Malcom Xs idea that the people suffering need to be the ones to do somthing about it, I ask you; Do a lot of severely oppressed women read Elle? I honestly don't know, but I doubt it.

I think it would be more effective to point out the inequality where you wouldn't expect it.

^ but that's precisely why ALL types of people should be advocating the cause, and all different experiences of prejudice should be explored whenever and wherever they can be. we should know about the girls in africa and india as much as we should know about the sexism closer to home. all humans. all places. that's how we get things done in this world. with open hearts, together. :flower: divided? nope. it won't happen.

^I wasn't suggesting they should exclude all mention of it, but I think the "hidden" inequality in our society should be one of the topics.

A lot of women I know think that the battle is won, and that there is no point in feminism anymore. I am used to being meet with defensive laughter when I point out how we are still seen as inferior. I think if we pointed out how they were being discriminated against, then more people would feel like they are a part of the battle.

^ agree that the notion of post-feminism is silly. ^_^

i think we should probably get back on the topic of emma; i am feeling guilty.

sorry moderators! we'll veer back onto emma's work and style.

I am really interested in this discussion about feminism and women that Emma's speech prompted. It was probably the aim of it.

New project:

Emma Watson, Daniel Bruhl to Star in Thriller ‘Colonia’

LONDON — “Harry Potter” star Emma Watson and Daniel Bruhl (“Rush”) will topline thriller “Colonia,” which will shoot in Luxembourg, Munich, Berlin and South America until the end of the year.

Pic, which is helmed by Florian Gallenberger (“John Rabe”), tells the story of Lena and Daniel, a young couple who become entangled in the Chilean military coup of 1973. Daniel is abducted by Pinochet’s secret police and Lena tracks him to a sealed off area in the south of the country, called Colonia Dignidad. The Colonia presents itself as a charitable mission run by lay preacher Paul Schäfer but, in fact, is a place nobody ever escaped from. Lena decides to join the cult in order to find Daniel.

Gallenberger and Torsten Wenzel penned the script, which is inspired by true events. Benjamin Herrmann is producing through his Majestic banner (“Desert Flower,” “John Rabe,” “Tour De Force”). Nicolas Steil will serve as co-delegate producer through Iris Productions (“Sunset Song”).

The behind-the-scenes creative team includes cinematographer Kolja Brandt, production designer Bernd Lepel, costume designer Nicole Fischnaller, makeup designers Waldemar Pokromski and Claudine Moureaud, sound recordist Carlo Thoss and editor Hansjoerg Weissbrich.

Pic is co-produced by Rat Pack Filmproduktion, in association with ProSieben and Sky, supported by FilmFernsehFonds Bayern, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, FFA German Federal Film Board, German Federal Film Fund (DFFF), Luxembourg Film Fund and the MEDIA program of the EU.

Watson is represented by Markham, Froggatt & Irwin (U.K.) and WME (U.S). Bruhl is represented by Players (Germany), Tavistock Wood (U.K.) and WME (U.S.).
