Here's a new interview with Emma about Fair Trade:

Emma Watson visits Swallows
Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

Emma Watson visited Swallows in Bangladesh with our CEO Safia Minney, to see how People Tree clothes were made. Swallows is a village as well as a workplace for over 200 women. Profits from their work with People Tree help cover the running costs of a school for 300 children and a daycare centre.

SAFIA MINNEY You studied a lot about Fair Trade before coming out to Bangladesh, and you knew a lot about People Tree’s work, but is Swallows different from how you expected?

EMMA WATSON Even after reading about it and hearing about it from you, seeing Swallows is just so different. It’s amazing how simple their techniques are, how they can create such beautiful items which compete with clothing that’s made in a factory or by a computer – it’s fantastic to see.

SAFIA How did it feel to see clothing made completely by hand?

EMMA It’s incredible all the stages you have to go through and it’s really hard to impress on people what a handmade product really means. Producing the yarn, hand dying the yarn, getting it on the loom, then weaving the fabric by hand, then cutting it, then sewing it, then embroidering it. It’s so hard for people to imagine all of that and what it takes to create something and how special that item of clothing is.

SAFIA What would you say to those who ask why bother making clothing by hand?

EMMA I went to the slums of Dhaka and I saw what the conditions are like for the people who work in factories and it’s just horrible. I don’t think that’s a way to work in the developing world.

The income coming from these garments is a huge proportion of the total GDP of Bangladesh, so making it in a sustainable way that will give workers some kind of decent life is essential. The girl who showed me how to use the sewing machine is 18 years old, she’s 2 years younger than I am, and that really made an impact on me! She was studying as well as earning a living here and really trying to make a life for herself – it’s inspirational.

SAFIA You’ve looked at different areas of Swallow’s production, but as well as that you’ve seen the Swallows’ day care centre for 60 children, from about 3 months to 5 years old. Then from 5 until 12 there is the school for 300 children. And it’s not just the children of the women who work here, but also for the wider community. What kind of message about Fair Trade do you want to bring to people?

EMMA It’s so hard to get people to care and to realize what a huge difference Fair Trade can make to someone’s life. If, when buying an item, people have the choice to buy Fair Trade or non Fair Trade, they should buy the Fair Trade item. It really does make all the difference – the contrast between Swallows and the slums in Dhaka is testimony to that.
People simply need opportunities to help themselves, to be able to work. I asked a woman yesterday what her hope for the future was, and all she said was ‘I want more work, I want Swallows to be bigger and more women to be involved’. They’re so proud to be Bangladeshi; so proud of their work – and they want it to get bigger.

SAFIA How do you think Fair Trade is going to get bigger?

EMMA If you see something that’s Fair Trade, just buy it… it makes all the difference. The contrast between this and Dhaka is incomparable, and sometimes the difference between Fair Trade and not Fair Trade is just pennies. So if you do care, if you have a conscience and want to help, simply make those small choices each time you have the option – it makes such a big difference.
People can be so trend orientated, after two or three months there’ll be something new and they’ll dispose of what they had before. But I think people should value what they own. If they buy something from Swallows they know that it’s come from a really special place: it’s handmade, it’s gorgeous and I designed it (if anyone cares!). You can keep it forever and it will always be special, because it’s made with love, care and pride.

Thanks for the pictures.

I think she was leaving London for who-knows-what destination. I actually wonder what the destination is. Some people wonder if it's for the photoshoot for Lancôme or to film Perks or to go to uni.

What is she in London for?

Like the casual outfit!!

I think she's been in London. In those photos, she's leaving.
Maybe she's headed to the US for something?

Love her boots in that picture. Actually, the whole outfit is cute. :D

Seeing her hair getting longer, I'm not too sure anymore if I'm going to like her with a bob...

it's just the growing out phase, there are terrible phases she'll have to go through
she should look at pictures of Nat Portman, she managed to look cute all the time when she was growing out her hair after she shaved it all off

Yes, the growing out phase is terrible.
But Natalie has just the most amazing bone structure and doesn't need her hair to look fabulous. If someone can pull of a shaven head, it's her! Emma is beautiful too, don't get me wrong, but to stand out more she really needs her long hair.

I AGREE COMPLETELY

I actually think the short hair highlights Emma's bone structure.
She looks good either way, but I love that she cut her hair.
It's a very refreshing change. Plus, Emma's hair is different from Natalie's.
Natalie has wavy, thick hair. Emma's hair is more fine and very straight.

I think she's one of the most naturally beautiful women! She can definitely pull off the pixie cut ,the bob , she has a very symmetrical face.

Interview of Alberta Ferretti and Emma about their collection:
The “green” capsule collection by Alberta Ferretti and British actress Emma Watson is only the first step in a long-term project that will associate Ferretti with “sensitive people, who want to be supportive of these kind of issues,” the designer told WWD.

Produced with materials and techniques that are environmentally friendly and made in Italy, the collection is labeled Pure Threads by Emma Watson Alberta Ferretti and will be available exclusively on albertaferretti.com beginning March 21.

“Rather than an opportunity, this is an urgent project,” said Ferretti. “Ecological materials cost twice as much, and selling online is a way to reach customers around the world faster, while containing costs.”

Part of the proceeds will be donated to People Tree, a nonprofit organization Watson supports. People Tree collaborates with manufacturers in 15 developing countries and stimulates small companies to produce low-impact clothing.

The collection, whose packaging is also environmentally friendly, consists of five pieces: two dresses, a shirt, a long skirt and a pair of denim shorts, all enriched with lace embroideries and made with organic fabrics such as cotton poplin, cotton muslin and hemp. “Emma had a Jane-Birkin-in-the-Seventies image in mind,” said Ferretti of the inspiration. While more accessible to a wide range of customer than her signature collection, the designs, Ferretti said, still feature her feminine and romantic touches. Prices range from 250 euros, or $345, to 850 euros, or $1,173 at current exchange.

“I’m pleased that a luxury brand such as Alberta Ferretti has decided to create ecological clothes,” said Watson. “I believe this is a big step forward for all of the international fashion industry, but also an important step for an increased sensitivity to the problem of ecology.”

“I’m grateful Emma accepted this creative partnership that can contribute to fashion and to the health of the planet,” said Ferretti of Watson. The actress, internationally known for her role as Hermione in the “Harry Potter” films for more than a decade, has worn Ferretti designs over the years and is emerging as a fashion plate on the red carpet, in addition to appearing in Burberry’s ads.

“She’s an actress I’ve followed since her early days. I like her freshness, her spontaneity and simplicity,” said Ferretti. “She is intelligent, with a strong personality, a young, modern girl of today but aware of social issues at the same time and very rigorous. This is a moment that demands strong attention to these issues and we can help in communicating them,” said the designer.
