Exclusives

Exclusives? In what respect? Exclusives at Rome fashion week?

^ Jil Sander?

Hmm... Jil Sander, of course this exclusive has been sort of popular over the seasons but what did it bring to the models in the end (when even a Prada exclusive can't always guarantee some real effect in a career).

Then Givenchy... I still doubt it means that much except a lot of hype on day one then most of times a ticket to oblivion.

I guess the term "exclusive" is overused. Oh, the irony.

Way overused. There are now exclusives for absolutely everything...

To complete what I was writing above, I would say I prefer a model who starts with a "fake exclusive" (for whatever reason) in NY like Ginta Lapina in NY at Proenza and ends up with a full week in Paris including Miu Miu etc.

It used to really just be Calvin, Jil, and Prada/Miu Miu.

Gucci as well, I guess, to a lesser extent (usually new girls who debuted two weeks earlier Karlie, Ekat, Abbey etc)

I don't think Jil do exclusives anymore? Or do they?
They were the 'curse', but it was always still intriguing to see which new face who would show up.

Yep, it used to be those when I started following it too...

To me it would be better if Jil doesn't do any exclusives anymore, would make sense. The 'curse' of course and also fashion and modeling are evolving in a different way now. We don't need the shock of the new all the time (even if it's a lot of fun when just sitting here and watching the shows like lottery).

I'd prefer a casting director exclusive at Jil Sander, as in Diana Farkhullina for Calvin Klein and Jil Sander back in the F/W 08.09 season.

The way I see it, the Fausto Sarli exclusives would be more like special requests to add more cachet to the show.

this really is ridiculous.
Calvin,Prada,Givenchy - and thats it.

Hey calm down!
It's obvious that Sarli is a smaller show and CK bla bla bla are the MONSTERS in the industry, but many newspapers reported that girls as exclusives for Sarli during AltaRoma 2011 so..ok you can call it a special request and they earned a big cachet to do only that show in Rome (and for their presence in a city that's not a fashion capital for sure). Stop.

^I think it's mainly a matter of vocabulary...

By exclusives people here often refer to more or less unknown new models that will only appear for a specific brand and it's consider as a chance for the models to get extra exposure faster this way blablah. It may work sometimes and not work many other times, it's the agent's job to take the risk or not.

So I think to stay true to this kind of "definition" we should, as you said, call what Sarli did some 'special request' as it's definitely what happened there. They had money to rather big names of modeling though direct booking and that's all. It's not a matter of giving extra exposure to an upcoming model but rather for the designer or brand to add some more 'prestige' or international appeal to the casting.

I think one of the best exclusives when it comes to career boosting is Givenchy Couture exclusive, in their S/S 2010 show the exclusives were Joan Smalls (her first big show), Ming Xi(first big show) and Rose Cordero and in the following months all three were having amazing ready to wear season, scoring big covers and campaigns...

^I don't like to think that one exclusive is stronger than the other.... It goes a bit further i think... Like how the agency will proceed w/ the new exposure of girl xxxx etc... And in the end of the day, it comes down to the girl's potential. An exclusive is not a career yet.

Yup. I'm with you cologne. It all sums up to the girl's potential and substance, no matter what show did she come from. Of course there are shows that get more exposure but people are quick to notice a potential star, so that should get her somewhere.

I don't get the fuzz around the Sarli show though. Nothing wrong with gathering some big names to add more prestige to a show. Maybe the 'exclusive' term sounds a bit grand for that arrangement, but still, if it didn't happen in the big cities' calendar circuit and it didn't cut the girls' potential (because they are already 'established', so to speak), I don't see it as a terrible thing.

^What is really ridiculous and cruel is Rad Hourani. Ever heard of Gloria Loitz? Janete Friedrich? Rena Donaldson? Kathlene Turner?

an exclusive refers to a face that the designer wants to pay exclusively to do their shows/fittings/looks for the show only because it would conflict with other designers Fashion week schedules if the model had to go on other castings and fittings so they are paid exclusively not to do other shows because it would conflict with doing looks/fittings/etc

How random... Couldn't they just settle on 2 or 3 girls? I hope Prada will not exaggerate with exclusives this season.

ETA: Was Lara really exclusive? I thought it was more of a special request.
