i think it's good to look around you see what inspire you, like street style someone you think is well dressed, look at details like where their tops fall, good dressing is usually about proportion.
If you have a slim figure structured clothing will look good on you, if you are curvier it's harder as you can't wear everything.
What do you have in your wardrobe.. and waht do you feel is missing? A genaral rule is to stay FAR away from high street shops-- save yor money and buy on the internet when you can then you wont be persuaded to buy what all others are wearing.
Dress for yourself-noone else, I know this is very hard when you are young.

. I also don't go too mini just about 3.5" or 4" above the knee. I was asking in the first place because I bought a really fun a-line short skirt with a single big pocket by anna molinari recently and when I tried it on without tights...yikes 
. but today I am wearing it with black ribbed opague tights, a Dries sweater that is very trapezey from last winter season (Im sure you know the one I mean!!) and of course my winter yucky day boots the Docs...and its fab
