Fashion Conglomerates

God, looks like I'm going to have to sell my soul to a big group in order to be successful. Sad times

GUS plc is a retail and business services group. Its activities include general merchandise retailing through Argos Retail Group, information and customer relationship management services through Experian and luxury goods through a majority shareholding in Burberry Group plc.

GUS has a 66% stake in the Burberry Group.

It’s Groupe Arnault, which owns Dior and thereby controls LVMH.

IT Holding SpA is another fashion conglomerate owning Ginfranco Ferre, Malo and Exte and (under license) producing D&G, Versus, Versace Jeans Couture, Just Cavalli, C’N’C Costume National.

Then there is Marzotto with brands like Hugo Boss, Valentino and Marlboro Classics and various activities in the textile sector.

Zegna is another major player producing clothes for Gucci and Armani among many others.

I will add that Costume National is still controlled by the Capasa brothers. Giorgio Armani and most of the Belgian designers are also more or less independent, as far as I remember.

I think there is another store that also belongs to that group but I cant remember which one it is.

I also think that LVMH owns Gianfranco Ferrè, non?
That's Hot Topic, the odd ball in GAP inc.

Ferre isn't apart of LVMH, I think they were at a time.

Gianfranco Ferre was chief designer at Dior so there must be some link...

i know they are owned by the Ferreti family but..
does AEFFE own or just manufactures moschino/Polini/ Gaultier etc?
cause i know Gaultier is semi owned by Hermes right ??

AEFFE is a manufacturing company that manufactures clothes for the above labels , it doesn't own them . It also owns and makes for POLLINI and even makes some things for Dior Homme , I think .

Hermes owns Gaultier which it bought from GIBO , the Girombelli family's group , and I have an idea that it's SEIBU , the Japanese conglomerate , who own quite a slice of Hermes , ( or it COULD be ONWARD KASHYAMA ) .

I'm surprised that no one mentioned Dolce & Gabbana since they are self owned.

of course i'd have to ask does anyone own yohji, comme des garcons or junya? thanks..

COMME owns Junya , and is a big player in Japan with a very large number of shops and labels , eg CDG Maille , Robe de Chambre , Homme Plus Plus etc .

Yohji is independent , I think , but no doubt has the backing of a large Japanese conglomerate .

here's the link : http://www.aeffe.it/aeffe.asp?lang=eng

Not forgetting the AEFFE Fashion Group that owns:

alberta ferretti ( and philosophy)
moschino ( and cheap and chic)
narciso rodrieguez
jean paul gaultier
and 2 smaller italian brands velmar and pollini

( and i think missoni is still an independent family concern, what about krizia?)

You're right about Comme, Kit. They are much larger in Japan than Yohji or Issey Miyake. In fact, I read once that Comme's profits are considerably more than both Issey and Yohji combined. They have shops in about every major city. It is much harder to find Yohji or Issey outside of Tokyo. I might be off in saying this... but it seems to me that more of my friends in the US and Europe know Yohji than in Japan.

As for Yohji, there are quite a few lines in Japan that he controls, outside of the eponymous label, Y's, and Y's for men. There are also Y's at work, Y's for living, and Yohji Design Studio... which I don't think Yohji has anything to do with except his name (from the look of the garments). But, as for the conglomerate who backs him, I'm not sure.

John

p.s. What about Neil Barrett and Hussein Chalayan?

^ Chalayan is independant, although he has a production deal with Gibo and a distribution deal with Onward Kashiyama (for Japan, of course)

Could you please explain that bit about Dior owning 40% of LVMH instead of the other way round?
I see it's already been explained now, but I was just going to say...look at www.eluxury.com. When you click on women's RTW, Dior is the first in the list, even though the rest of the list is alphabetical. Dior Homme in the men's section is still listed normally, though. But that's sort of odd, isn't it? Why not have both of them at the top of their lists?

Gosh, reading this thread is saddening and awakening at the same time. The brands we love are all owned by the big cheeze, yet without it there would be no profit, no big budgets, hardly anything at all.

CHANEL , owned by the Wertheimer family is the only really profitable ' petit ' conglomerate, with its own stable of couture ateliers , but the house only makes a profit on its perfumes . Wertheimer brought Gabrielle Chanel back to her eponymous house from her post-war disgrace , simply as a means of gaining maximum exposure for the perfumes . ( When all is said and done , and Dame Karla has strutted his stuff , he is only a glorified perfume salesman , as was proven by the £2,000,000 TV commercial for Chanel No.5 , last Christmas ) . It's the revenue from the perfumes that keeps this house afloat . :o

Wertheimer also own Eres Lingerie, Tanner Krolle, Holland & Holland and some smaller win producers.

I just discovered that Phillips-Van Heusen owns IZOD, Calvin Klein, Van Heusen, Bass, Arrow, Michael Kors, Sean John, BCBG, Geoffery Beene and Kenneth Cole.

Kit, does Comme owns Junya, or is he just a highly-paid employee that has total creative freedom? I think it's the latter.
